Is the strength at 165 unprecedented or what?

Have there been other weights where there have been 3 NCAA champs like 165 this year?  It also is possible we could see all 3 in Chattanooga for the Southern Scuffle.   Pretty cool stuff!

I have been thinking about this very thing. Sadly my data on champions is not str4uctured well to do this (it is somewhat summary level), but I will attempt a work around.

Drowning in data, but thirsting for knowledge

I could have this wrong but I believe that in 2008 Schlatter was the only champ up until that time, no?

That is correct.

2017 184 had Nickal, Martin, and Dean, but Nickal hadn’t one a title yet heading in. Similar with 2018 125 that had Cruz and NATO as previous champs.  Neither of them made the finals losing to future multiple time champs Suriano and Lee.

Can’t think of a time there were 3 previous champs in the same NCAA bracket, but I’d think it has happened.

Close - but the Gophers had an AA at 157 in 2009 and it was not DS. They had no entry at 149 though.  So it looks like only Leen and Gregor Gillespie were defending champs at 157 in 2009.

My bad. I could swear DS was in the tourney but hurt and didn't place.

Good call.  Really makes you think the whole nostalgia over that 149 class is a bit overblown. There are a lot of weights that have 4-5 future champs/finalists in them.  Judging how tough a weight is by future placements is really pretty dumb. Why did everyone start thinking this was a good way to look at it?

Agreed definitely overblown…2016 141 had Heil, gross , Ashnault all champs , then add in McKenna 3rd twice and 2nd, ..Meredith 3x AA 2nd 2x ..Kevin jack 4x AA , Micah Jordan 3x AA and ncaa finalist, a few other multiple time AAs as well …you can say that’s tougher than that 149 bracket too

While I don't think comparing present accomplishments with career - in hindsight - isn't apples and oranges, it isn't what the OP was looking for.

2008 149 is definitely an all-timer.  We all know and agree to this.  It didn't have 2x JB, though.  That hadn't happened yet.

What weight classes had the most accomplishments congruently, nor cumulatively?  This year's 165 has to be right up there.

What had those gents won PRIOR to the 2008 tournament taking place, though?  JB hadn't even pulled a podium finish yet, had he?
