Will they? Won't they?

Today is supposed to be the day that the D1 Council makes their decision.

The original decision got kicked back to the Division 1 Committee on Student -Athlete Reinstatement and Legislative Committee (name chosen by the Department of Redundancy Department?) on October 4th at the request of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (good thing there is not a ton of bureaucracy slowing this down).

How long before someone makes a joke on this thread that starts "I bet....."?

The Hawks are my #2 team, but I won't be overly upset with whatever decision is made.  They knew the rules, they messed around... now they pay the price.

On the other hand, it looks like the exact thing these guys were doing may well be legal going forward.  Someone likened that to keeping marijuana offenders (not dealer level)  in state prisons after marijuana was decriminalized in those states.

From the release:

Effective immediately, reinstatement guidelines for student-athletes who wager on teams at their school — excluding their own team — will start at requiring one season of ineligibility and a loss of one year of eligibility. Student-athletes will also be required to participate in sports wagering rules and prevention education as a condition of reinstatement. Previous guidelines, as approved in June, prescribed permanent ineligibility for those cases. The adjusted guidelines may be applied to cases in which student-athletes are currently serving suspensions related to wagering on a different team at their own school that were reported on or after May 2, 2023.

So we think that means what specifically for individual Iowa & Iowa St wrestlers?  You got a table?

For Iowa it means Assad, Cass are done. Brands can apply for a medical RS for missing a year prior. May or may not get approved. Kennedy and Scheiver will miss time, not sure about the whole year. For Iowa St, Johnson out for the year with a year lost eligibility wise as well.

Siebrecht and Brands also lose a full year along with Assad and Cass (done). I thik Schreiver and Kennedy lose a few matches but can wrestle this year.

Are you hinting at that, MizzouFan01 and JimmyC share the same thoughts...

My burger was all about the pastry and nothing to do with MizzF except I hit reply on his info.

Are we sure about Paniro?  I thought there was chatter that he may be in the clear from the NCAA if the alleged infractions occurred while he was grayshirting?

I know he’s facing actual criminal charges, but I wasn’t sure if that may be different and that he might be able to redshirt this year.

This really sucks as a fan. I do think the punishment is a bit too harsh but I never found myself sympathizing too much given that there was never any ambiguity regarding the consequences. The wrestlers brought this on themselves.

How the heck does a coaches' son do something so pointlessly assisine?

Nelson's Twitter tantrum and Assad's pouty interview were a really bad look.

I can say all that and still honestly feel that it's a damn shame that I won't see those guys wrestle again (probably) in college.

Iowa's wrestlers issues is they were all seniors, any full year suspension was a de facto career ended. Betting on your own school was previously a permanent ban, NCAA decided 1 year is more appropriate (betting on your own team is still permanent as it should be) but since Cassioppi, Assad, Nelson bet on something Iowa (Nelson admitted football but apparently the WBB game was popular) they still get a year and thus are done except Nelson can apply for the year back now when he couldn't before.

The reality is the NCAA couldn't go from a permanent ban to anything less than a year, would be an awfully weak look.

As a PSU fan, I feel bad for all of them. You can say "they knew the rules" all you want and it would be true but end of the day, it's just a bunch of college kids doing something harmless and thinking they would never get caught. Let's be honest, we've all been there for the most part.

Agree - and it’s something that is happening in colleges across the nation, not just the state of Iowa.
