So this is what I have for weights that are qualified:

74  Dake

86  Taylor

97  Snyder

125  Parris

What are the qualifiers for 57 and 65 that we need to win?   Pan Am?   Is there some other tourney?

mspart

Pan Ams.  Top two go from there, so we typically want to be opposite side as Cuba.

For the right to get the chance to be our OG qualifier for those games any medalist from adjacent weights and in this cycle can 'challenge' for the right to be the guy.

For 57 KG, for example, Gilman, Fix, and Arujau can challenge Richards.

For 65 KG, Johnny D or Zain Retherford can challenge.  Arujau and Fix can also technically challenge Lee as well.

Whoever wins what would end up being a 'mini tournament' would then earn the right to wrestle at Pan Ams.

If I am Arujau... do I throw my hat in the ring for the 65 KG chance on the off-chance that he has to wrestle Zain first, to wear him out for Johnny D in R2?

I think Diakomihalis challenges for sure.

Does that then get Retherford to challenge so that he can wear out Diakomihalis for his buddy Lee?

Does that then get Arujau to challenge so that he can get a chance to wear out Retherford for his buddy Diakomihalis?

What then if Retherford and Diakomihalis meet first?

Is it like a bracket? One guy gets a bye to round two? Who gets the bye? Is it random?

Pan Ams is going to have more expats than a Hong Kong finance convention. Hopefully there are as few pre-finals matchups as possible.

At 57 (US rep, RBY, Cruz) and 65 (US rep, Gomez, O'Neill) at least one person will have to go to the global last chance.

I read it to be a ladder match scenario but that would be akin to the old ways. A deadline to challenge followed by a mini tourney is a much better scenario for all.

Yianni all but said he was going to challenge right away. I haven’t heard anything about the others.

I think he tweeted something along the lines of, "it's time to take back what's mine."

Which cracked me up. It's not like he was stripped of the title. He lost. Twice.

It really does not seem to be advantageous to any of the challengers to do so. They force themselves to make scratch 3x instead of just once if they win: challenge tourney/match + Pan Am + OTT. Especially at 57.

Knowing how tough the cut is for Gilman, Vito, Fix, and Richards it really does seem silly to make weight multiple times when the strategic advantage is to only make Richards make it 2x (Pan Am + OTT). At least Vito can sit until the semis (and same with Retherford if he decides to cut back down to *65 which the eye test says will be a tough cut). I get the whole competitor’s mentality aspect but strategically I don’t.

Nick Lee has owned Yanni. Frankly, I'm not sure Nick Lee doesn't have a World Silver if he has Rivera's draw...but I digress.

Given that Lee is undefeated against Rivera in both styles, including a 13-2 win in Zagreb in February, I think I know the answer.

So I'm confused about how the person will be chosen to represent the US at 57 and 65 at Pan Ams and at the last chance?

Does anyone know how that works?

mspart

A date hasn't been set for the 'challenge' matches to happen, however the criteria in which they can challenge has been laid out.

The last chance are after OTT.  This is the only chance someone can have to challenge for the right to go to Pan Ams.

Now if they qualify the weight at Pan Ams (Top 2), then they automatically get the 1 seed at OTT (Zain and Arujau already have the #2 seeds and a bye to the semi-finals, so this would apply to Johnny D or Lee at 65 KG and Richards, Gilman, or Fix at 57 KG).

Thanks for the info NHS.   I'm getting that Pan Ams is before OTT and last chance is after.   So I'm still unclear on the mechanism to choose the guy for Pan Ams.   Current WTT member or they have a special fight?   Last Chance should be the OTT winner for the weight I'm thinking.

Current WTT member unless challenged.

Olympic Last Chance will be the OTT winner but hopefully will not need to be attended because whoever goes to Pan Am continental qualifier at 57 and 65 gets the job done.

Agreed.   Thanks BNW.

So it is the challenge that I am confused about.   This would have to happen before OTTs.   How will that work?

mspart

It will happen before Pan Ams but the date to submit a challenge and the date(s) of said challenge have not been publically released yet.

Challenge

TBD
Pan Ams Feb 1-3
OTT Apr19-20
Olympic global last chance  May 9-12
Olympics Aug 5-11

Sounds like this will be confusing for awhile until USAW comes out with a statement.   A challenge?   Best 2 of 3?   If more than one challenger, a round robin tourney?   Best 2 of 3?   Too many questions.

It is single elimination for the challengers. That winner will take on Richards and Lee best of three.
