What do people think about this situation?

Michael Oher, depicted in 'The Blind Side,' alleges he was never adopted by Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, but signed into a conservatorship | CNN

Sort of sad as it sounds like Oher is going to sue the family; however, I read reports that the family didn't hardly make any money off of the movie.

Most of the reasonable news articles suggesting not a lot of money from the movie but was shared equally.  Sounds like couldn't adopt given age and conservatorship prob the legal option in that state.  Seems no doubt the family went well beyond what most would do.  Sad that it comes to this.

The Tuohy's are loaded, Sean Tuohy owned 120ish Taco Bell,  KFC and Long John Silvers restaurants and sold all but 11 of them for 215 Million,  They didn't need Ohers money and they took him in when he was in HS,  they would have no Idea the kid would make it in college or the NFL for that matter.

Yes they had money before they took him in, didn't need anything from him or take anything, they used their money to help provide for him.  Believe the movie and book also made those points.

Just saw an article that said the family and Oher got $767,000 from the movie. If I were him, I'd be going after the producer of the film since that is peanuts compared to the $330million that the movie made.

This is a really weird case.

The financial matters of a movie and payouts are all under contract before a movie is made.   If you want a guarantee, you get x amount.   If you want to gamble that the movie will be very successful, then you go for a cut of the profits.  

As an aside, I personally know two of the musicians on Heart's first album, Dreamboat Annie.   They took the stipend and wish they had taken a cut of the profits.   20-20 is hindsight my padawans!! 

From what I have read, Oher refused any payments due to the movie.  Which makes this even weirder.   I think he has some people that are influencing him to do this that have surpassed his better judgment.  Why would he do this to the Twoeys?  Or, the Twoeys are white devils.  

So who is going to help the next kid that needs help?  Lessons from this are being learned no doubt.  What if the Twoeys had done nothing, where would Oher be now?   Impossible to say but the probability of him playing in college and the NFL would be very very low.

Oher was already enrolled at the private school and an all-state football player before he moved in with Tuohys. His HS coach was Hugh Freeze before Freeze was hired at Ole Miss.

I suspect if they did nothing, we wouldn’t have a movie featuring them so prominently but I believe the probability of him playing in college and the NFL about the same.

The wikipedia says:

Oher's initial low grades were a barrier to his acceptance to an NCAA program. He raised his 0.76 grade point average (GPA) to a 2.52 GPA by the end of his senior year so he could attend a Division I school, by enrolling in some 10-day online courses from Brigham Young University. Taking and passing the online courses allowed him to replace Ds and Fs earned in earlier school classes, such as English, with As earned via the Internet.^[8] This finally raised his graduating GPA above the required minimum.

So inferring from this that the Tooeees probably helped him get in touch with the BYU program and helped motivate him to do the courses so he could get into college.   Is there  reason to suspect this was not the case?

So appears he was not recruited into the private school for football, the movie (as most do) took some liberties.  But he probably wouldn't have got into a D1 college if not for the Tuohys.

What specific help from the Touhys are you referencing?

Or are you broadly talking their presence here. I’m not disputing they had a role in some things, but their influence as depicted in the film is a ways from reality, like a lot of “based on a true story” and “inspired by true events” stories.

And yes, he’d have found his way to a D1 program eventually.

Absolutely.

There is no way he or the Touhys knew that you could take 10 day courses (10 day courses?) to get an easy A to replace a semester long F without an Ol Miss shaped birdie whispering in their ear. It is like the Dresser Last Chance Open it is designed for one thing and one thing only.

He wouldn't have played HS football in most districts in WA.   Must have 2.0 GPA to do sports.

IMO they may have been most motivated to get him to go to their alma mater of Ole Miss where they were boosters.  They may not have known he would make the NFL but he was already rated as the #5 OL recruit in the country.
