During the 2021-22 season, Yanni nearly lost to Ridge Lovett in OT at Las Vegas.  When the two met in the national finals, it wasn't even close.  I suspect a similar outcome this year: while Yanni lost an early season match to Gomez, on Saturday night, I think he wins his 4th title going away probably by dominating a high-quality opponent in Sasso.  That said, and I'm not a Cornell (or for that matter, a Yanni) fan, but it seems to me that the Big 10 and Iowa went all in on promoting Lee while Cornell and the EIWA have been comparatively silent on Yanni's potential 4th title.  Shane Sparks can barely contain his man crush and Spenser's sycophants also have a tendency to suck all the air out of the room with the 4-timer talk.  Yanni deserves a little more credit in my opinion and I can't help but think that Cornell missed an opportunity.

If you believed that you would know how to spell his name. You did work in...

Gomez and Ridge are two different styles. Too bad Gomez is hurt because I think he would give Yianni a real tough match if he was injury free. Ridge is more like Sasso in my mind which is to say he is like Yianni just not as good as Yianni.

I was at the EIWA tournament at the Palestra last week, and I was disappointed that the crowd didn't acknowledge Yianni after he won the final or after the 149 pound medal ceremony.  Along with Dake, the best EIWA wrestler ever (but unlike Dake, Yianni never lost an EIWA match in his career).  Only the Cornell section stood and gave him an ovation each time.

In a recent interview, Yianni said that he was still in the freestyle mindset, thinking about his WC gold medal loss, when he wrestled Gomez in November.  He hasn't made that mistake since, and won't make it this week against any opponent.

Don't know about Yanni but Gomez easily beat Yianni before he was injured.  Yes too bad we won't see that version this week.

This has been a head scratcher for me too. So little discussion of a guy going for his fourth title. But, he has the misfortune of doing it at the same time as another guy going for his fourth title who has been significantly more dominant throughout the process.

Also, perhaps the more historically dominant program with the largest fanbase playing a role.  Not to mention the "excuses are for wusses" clip may have been more mainstream than the "nuts" soundbite.

Yianni also didn't step on the line against Sasso and wasn't at CKLV like years past.  I also don't think he mentioned on ESPN that he tore his ACL his freshman year so it didn't get the attention Spencer did.

I do like Yianni and don't hold that against him, but if we are talking about self promotion and attention, he would probably be getting more of the spotlight if was participating in the bigger events this year.  I am guessing he is focused on his goals and doesn't care about the attention that Spencer is getting.

Hmmm... Hopefully, there WILL be celebratory congrats on this Saturday night for TWO 4 X'ers, regardless of the "style" points to achieve it. 🙂

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Shane sparks is in sales.   And primarily works for the big 10 network.   What world is he promoting some Ivy kid?

my guesses on why Yianni is not getting as much attention as might be expected:

As noted, another guy is also going for his 4th and he wrestles for Iowa

In comparison to the other Cornell 4xer, Dake had the novelty of going for 4 in 4 different weight classes which got tons of attention

Dake going for 4th v returning Hodge winner Taylor also was huge. Certain discussion boards were almost fixated on it.

To a much lesser degree but something that might factor in more for future 4 timers...the more times it happens especially with less time in between occurrences, the less 'awe' factor there is.

Bigger events, like the World Championships in 2022?  Or the Soldier Salute?

I think I clearly stated that it was Cornell (in my opinion) that likely missed an opportunity.

Clearly a scheduling mistake by Coach Grey.

Obviously not his error, but you can see why a mega conference with their own network gets more national attention than the EIWA.  I still have not watched EIWA tournament matches despite the fact that an athlete I have worked with in the past qualified through the conference.

I think Mike Grey & Co. are focussed right now on the goals at hand, not the hype.  There will be plenty of time for the hype afterwards.  We'll see if it  pays off.

And then you clearly said that……

Which is why I was curious if the big 10 sales guy announcer is responsible for promoting an Ivy League dude.

I don’t know a lot of sales guys who promote a competitor’s product.

Exactly. I wish in the U.S the World Championships got the coverage that NCAA wrestling does, but it doesn't.   I am also guessing if Yianni wanted all the hype, he could get it.
