Has anyone ever accomplished the unique achievement of sending the season in the R12 at NCAAs 4x?  Two wrestlers could get it done this season.

Micky Phillippi RS-Med/Transfer inelligible-R12-COVID-R12-R12-?

Max Murin RS-R12-COVID-R12-R12-?

This year Phillippi is the 9 seed with a crazy difficult draw to the semis Teske, Nagao/Henson, RBY.

Meanwhile Murin is the 8 seed in a similar position.  He has Burgos in the first round, but Milner is his likely 2nd round opponent.   Milner beat him last year in the R12 8-1 en route to a 6th place finish.  Should he get past Milner he will likely face Yianni D. in the quarters.

Do you think either of these guys make it 4x R12?

I think Jake Sufflohn (sp?) from Nebraska was...maybe??  I think for sure he was a 4x qualifier but never AA'd.

I think he wasn't that close.  He went 1-2 as a freshman-R12-R16-Medical-R12.  Only a 2xer R12.

I thought David Terao was going to this ignominy as a senior when he spoiled it with a 4th place finish, but I misremembered.   He was 1-2,R12,R12,4th.

Mark McKnight was also somewhat close.  R12-R12-Transfer/redshirt-R16-4th and that 4th place finish, like Terao's, was somewhat of an unexpected run.

George DiCamillo was a 3x R12 before breaking through and making the finals as the 6 seed losing to Heil …it was a very underrated bracket that had National champ Ashnault  as well as ncaa finalists Eierman , McKenna, Ronnie Perry, and Meredith and multiple time AAs and yearly top 5 guys Kevin Jack ,Kolodzik and Luke pletcher who was screwed out of his finals chance

Pat Pitsch ASU 165

He is probably the closest so far.  He was R16 as a freshman in 2005.  R16-R12-R12-R12.

Artelona from Penn is a 2x round of 12

Filled out my brackets today and I have him R12 again this year. If he loses in the first round to Jacques (which I have happening) and all seeds hold, his blood round match would be Franek. If he beats Jacque then loses to AOC, his blood round is most likely one of Lewan/Scott/Cardenas. Tough draw for him to break through this year.

Fwiw rooting for them both. What the heck I’ll say one of them does AA this year….lean Murin.

Josh humphreys has been R12 in his 2 trips to the tournament

Yes.

2019: Lost R12 to Ryan Deakon

2020: COVID (seeded #7)

2021: Rehab/Injury Year (knee)

2022:  Last year was particularly heartbreaking.  He beat Peyton Robb (8-5) in the R16, lost to Deakin in the QF, and hit AOC in R12.  Had AOC beat with < 10s to go and had a mental lapse that resulted in AOC getting a late TD to win by 1.

Artalona was injured mid season in 2019-2020?  It looks like he wrestled in two duals.

Bet there's a fairly substantial number of guys who have been R12 twice. Two that come to mind quickly are Scott Justus from Va Tech and Jeff Peanut Bowyer from JMU.

I had thought of Justus the other day for this.  Looked it up and he was RS-NQ-R12-NQ-R12 so he was only a 2x R12.  His RS Junior year he was the #1 seed and went 1-2.  Both times he lost in the R12 he lost to the eventual 8th place finisher.

Another 184lbs from that era Nate Patrick of Illinois was also a 2x R12 finisher.  One year he was Big Tens and was seeded as high as #2.

I think Bowyer was non qualifier/qualifier/R12/R12. I know his senior year he lost in 2nd round to Bonomo who would win his 3rd title that tournament, and then in blood round lost to Palacio who had been runner-up to Bonomo the year before.

Yeah that's essentially what I found looking at old brackets.  JMU having dropped their program doesn't have much in the way of records available on the internet.  He was R12 his last two years.  His sophomore year he lost in an early round and there was not full wrestle backs.

The fact that there were not full consolations for a large period of time and that freshman couldn't compete for a different somewhat earlier large period of time probably means that if there ever was a R12 4xer that individual probably wrestled in the past 30 years.
