I get really, really frustrated watching Antrell. He can obviously do some amazing stuff but seemingly chooses to be passive and conservative most of the time.

This doesn't really fit the criteria of the original post but I felt like RBY became less dynamic and fun to watch his junior, and, especially, senior year

Antrell throws a good punch though

Mostly guys that are super defensive and would lose if stalling was called more. Ferrari, Blaze, Cam Amine, Lockett come to mind immediately

Whose the worst 4 timer? Many would argue Logie shouldn't have won his first title so that's a potential candidate but I would argue Yianni, only because he doesn't quite have the wins that the others do. Aaron Brooks has the worst loss though

Victoria Anthony only made one senior World team

Undisputed trailblazer, but she ran into brick walls for most of her career

The talent and work it takes to get to the NCAA semis and finals in the last 20 years is a very high hurdle.  My view is that the guys nominated for this award from recent years would have done even better 40 years ago.  The depth of strong competition at each weight has trended up - my opinion and no way to measure with any precision.

The stupid stuff  I'm referring to was on the mat. He actually succeeded by doing what shouldn't work.

well then I flatly disagree. The guy pinned james green multiple times with the same stuff, its legit. Just cause it ain't for the masses doesn't mean its bad.

I'd put AJ Ferrari on this list.  Absolutely awful to watch.  Loved when Bastida rag dolled him.

he might be absolute lowest I'd accept making the "great" cut off.

The first names that came to mind when I was reading this topic immediately were Mike Evans and Jacob Warner of Iowa. They were AAs whose matches were painful to watch because of how boring they were.

I disagree with all of these. All 3 were excellent

As the original post suggests, they are all excellent, including Fix.  Obviously tough to choose the worst great wrestler.  I mean Fix took 2nd like 6 times, right.  Great, but not a champion.  They were all boring to me.  That doesn’t mean they weren’t great.  Completely agree with the Taylor reference too…super athletic, super boring.  Anyhow…fun topic.

I don't think he makes the cut on "great", and unlike perry I don't think he has a oversized reputation. Though you could make a good argument based on the fact that he has more notoriety than his brother who I consider to be better, so maybe you're on to something.

Expand

He was a 2x NCAA finalist. 4x AA. That is a pretty significant accomplishment. With all the stupid stuff he would do on a regular basis he shouldn't have even been a starter.

By stupid stuff, I would mostly consider his tactics setups for big moves i.e. Gator Bait.  He was a big move guy, super fun to watch IMO.

To my point!  Literally just smiled for 3 minutes watching that.  Most wrestlers could never get away with any of that.  Love it!!

Edit: nor should most even try to.  Very different style than his big bro.  Both great, in different ways.

I agree.  Loved watching him wrestle.

Would anyone object if I made the cut off for "great" NCAA champ? At this rate I'm scared someone's gonna throw out Jordan Williams or something.

Your rules but I’d throw out champ or 4x AA.  They’re all pretty freaking great!

Its your thread so you can define the rules.  Just don't be surprised when the thread is hijacked to talk about the best worst poster.

I mean, is a 1-time champ (1-time AA) more impressive than a 4x AA (non-champ).  Don’t have the capacity or time to see how many, if any, there are.

the distinction between the two in my mind is the public perception of NCAA champs is above 4x AAs, and I used the word "great" which i feel involves public perception.....but whatever 4x AAs allowed!

I agree that the public perception is as such.  I also think if I was awarded the opportunity to choose for myself, I would take the one title.  However, the consistency at that level is extremely impressive, as well.

In terms of pure wrestling technique, it's going to be anyone you consider a great heavyweight.

i'm not saying he was sergio vega technically but I'd submit stephen Neal as a guy at HWY who deserved very little of the HWY stigma.
