it would be much easier to write this kid off if i did not know him personally and really like him just as an actually nice and jovial kid who just was dealt a really tough hand early on in life...

obviously, there comes a point when your past can not define your future...

everyone eventually figures it out...

some just take awhile longer than others...

Trying to be tasteful in reference to the above post.....but not in shape, quits, poor teammate, constantly in stupid self-inflicted trouble....hard to like.

when he showed up in iowa last season, pre-season my guy in the room was like, "JW is my boy!!!"

6 months later he was not very well liked by anyone...

i can not fault anyone for their opinions on him from afar...

it just suks that a genuinely nice kid with that much talent can't get straight...

it happens...

This is sad.  He has run into these problems for a while now, across a number of programs.  It seems like he has no one that is willing to help him transition to being an self sufficient adult.  It would be easy to cut him off the team, or keep in in the practice room.  Both of those situations are just using the kid.  He is not a good influence for the other kids in the program, but Iowa has not been a high character team for a while now.  It would be ideal if there were some sort of intervention for this kid and set him straight.  Wrestling ends and in a couple of years, he still has to make a life for himself.

To be so drunk that you don't take obvious precautions to protect yourself when sleeping off a buzz... dang man.

I know going sober is easier said than done but if he doesn't, alcohol may very well kill him or lead him to kill someone accidentally.

How do you know no one was willing to help him? Its almost like you made that up so you could get on a soapbox.

I almost said that.  I’ll bet several / many tried to help him.

It seemed he was doing fine at Little Rock but maybe Arkansas just doesn't have newspapers.

When he left Stilly I thought LR was the perfect place to get help and more attention.  When announced Iowa I was worried again.

I’m sure he got plenty of help at Iowa.

If I needed a lift out of town and my only options were JW or AJ I'd jump in the car with JW.

Ok ... if the reason I needed to get out of town was an oncoming zombie apocalypse I'd go with AJ.

Btw:  the help he needs is AA rehab.

Jw has known to be asleep at the wheel.  Apparently.

jw may get tired after a 3 min drive too.  So pick with  care

AJ has been known to roll cars and destroying them by fire.

I've turned on the Brands' coaching ability, but I'd bet the farm they tried very hard to help him, possibily still are.

LR was probably a nicer place with a nicer staff, than Iowa City where success is demanded and the staff are old school and prickly. I'm sure there are nice mental health pros in Iowa City (they tend to be caring, touchy feely types) but it doesn't matter if he isn't willing to make big and permanent changes. Being arrested for drunkenness once a year for the past 4 years means he's been an arrestable level of drunk many more times. Sucks for the kid that he can't have a drink without the risk of having 10 more, but some people are wired that way. I have a good buddy like that, and a couple family members... You worry about them and hope they stay alcohol free but they usually don't.

The only option for that type is rehab and to totally absolutely quit.  I've seen it work.  The problem is the individual has to recognize/admit they have a problem.  Pretty hard to commit to rehab if not willing or encouraged to give up wrestling short term to 100% focus on the rehab.

My GF is 3 or 4 years sober at this point and she’s very open about it and about what it took to get there and to make a change…it was not nothing, her life fell completely apart before she made the change, lost her children and all until she got clean. I remain puzzled by those who LOVE alcohol, but we all have our vices and mine are equally as bad, so I’m not here judging, just not able to understand fully.
