In williams defense, and unless i'm misreading the article, anyone else think sleeping in a car drunk as hell shouldn't be a crime or misdemeanor? IDK if it makes enforcing other crimes impossible or something.

I had a roommate in college.   He was going to pick up family the next day and had a flat on the car.   We were drinking that day.   To be proactive - He was changing the tire … not in the car …. Not driving the car …. Etc.   they gave him an owi.   Sort of ruined his life he wasn’t the same afterwards for some reason

premise was the car keys in his coat were near the car

A running car can produce potentially fatal carbon monoxide (CO) in a parking lot/garage, even if there is little or no wind. A roof can allow exhaust to accumulate, and you cannot reliably judge CO concentration by smell or how the air feels.

According to the CDC upwards of 400 people die annually in the USA from accidental (non suicidal) carbon monoxide poisoning.

I knew someone who died got stuck in the ditch, open road, nothing around for miles, cold so left car running.  Knew another did it in the garage intentional.   If there is no wind where will the CO go?  Why do we have CO detectors for small airplanes if flying thru open air at 200mph ... won't it just blow away?

reading this thread you'd think LBJ had said its impossible to die of CO2 poisining and you'd said Jordan williams had obviously attempted suicide.

This has nothing to do with the discussion though. If Williams had been sober he would have driven away, he wasn't detained for attempting suicide.

I don’t think he attempted suicide.  Apologies if that’s what it sounded like.   Tis not what I meant nor was it what I was going for.

i am just saying running a car and sleeping in a parking garage isn’t as safe as BJL makes it out to be

Thats all good, I just don't think there is an actual disagreement here.

Yes.  In a parked car

reading comprehension will is essential though

also an attention span longer than large man smash may be required.

just wanted to make sure it didn’t come off that way.  That’s a different allegation and I want no part of that

This is all silly; its not smart as Ionel says and there is a slight risk.  I also was trying to be clever, 'LIE' known as the longest parking lot in the world and the possibility of being stuck bumper to bumper for 2 hours.  BUT now we have to get nitty gritty, we have to include the AC; was it on recirculate or outside air and how does this affect the percentages??

No, dummy…

Could someone plug up an exhaust where in some universe it could happen?

sure…

could a 1969 skylark with a rusted out header below a rusted out floor board potentially cause an accumulation of carbon monoxide to possibly kill someone in some universe?

sure…

but to suggest sitting in a parked car for 2 hours in any parking lot presents any real danger is anonymous forum nerd deluxe argument…

Tell that to the ~400 who accidentally (non suicide) die annually

also its more to poke BJL and his intellect than anything else

Couple found dead in car in New Haven parking garage

NEW HAVEN >> A man and a woman were found dead Sunday morning in a running car in a city parking garage, police said Tuesday.

The couple was found at about 10:05 a.m. by Officer Arpad Tolnay as he made his routine check of the 200 Orchard St. garage.

“He spotted a black VW Jetta parked on the first level and saw its engine was running,” police spokesman Officer David Hartman said in a press release. “When he approached the car, he saw two people inside. Officer Tolnay opened the door and was overwhelmed by the smell of exhaust.”

Police and EMTs could not revive the couple, Hartman said. The man, a 28-year-old Monroe resident, was in the front seat and the woman, a 20-year-old New Fairfield resident, was in a rear seat.

The state Chief Medical Examiner’s office was called to the scene.

I didn't think anyone was, I was just using a hyperbolic example to establish that the dangers of CO2 poisoning arent really pertinent to the Jordan Williams discussion. If anything he was in danger of drowning in his own vomit....but thats also neither here nor there.

I would tell them its not smart like I said.  So maybe stay off the 'LIE' ???     Should iI tell them to turn on the AC to help or will it make it worse??  recirculate or outside air?

First you try and make it seem that 400 deaths a year occur in parked cars…

now you find an isolated incident and try to use it as proof there is a real danger…

don’t ever change, nerd…

Husband blames carbon monoxide after wife, mechanic die in Newark garage

ByEyewitness News  WABC logo
2 people found dead in Newark parking garage

Anthony Johnson reports that there were high levels of carbon monoxide.

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- Police are investigating after two people were found dead inside a Newark parking garage from apparent carbon monoxide poisoning.

The bodies of a man and a woman were discovered near a running car just before 9 p.m. at an apartment complex on 18th and New Fairview avenues.

Authorities say the incident appears to be accidental.

Kahali Johnson said one of the victims is his wife, identifying her as Tameka Hargrave. He found the bodies after smelling a strong odor of gas in his apartment. He said an alarm went off, and he went to investigate the source.

He said it smelled like automobile exhaust, and eventually, he made his way to the garage before finding the running vehicle and the two victims. Authorities say Hargrave was found on the ground, and that the man was a mechanic looking at her vehicle.

"As I tried to step to open the last garage door, I see the mechanic, he's laid out," Johnson said. "She's just a few feet away, she's laid out. And pretty much I had to call 911, because at this time, with that level of emissions, I knew that they were gone."

The male victim has not yet been identified.

"Basically she died because of carbon monoxide," Johnson said. "They do not have adequate alarm systems, because if there had been an alarm in that garage, people would have been alerted to the fact that it was going on."

It is certainly a concern.  Both of the examples I gave were parked cars even though BLJ seems to think that is impossible.  Caveira provided more data.

2 children found dead in van in Detroit casino parking garage died of carbon monoxide; no charges filed

Updated on: January 28, 2026 / 4:24 PM EST / CBS Detroit

No charges will be filed after two children died of carbon monoxide poisoning while inside a van parked in a Detroit casino parking garage. Investigators say their family was trying to live out of the van.

The case involved a 9-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl who were found to be not breathing as family members checked on them in February 2025. Three other children in the vehicle were also taken to an area hospital and admitted.

Detroit police said that the family of five children, along with their mother and a grandmother, appeared to be living in the van, which was parked for at least three days in a Hollywood Casino parking garage on Lafayette in Greektown.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's office later ruled that the manner of death was accidental, the prosecutor's office said.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy issued a statement Wednesday, almost a year after the incident, saying that no criminal charges would be filed against the children's mother, based on insufficient evidence to support such a case.

"However, we remain very concerned about the welfare of the remaining living children," Worthy said. "While we, like many others, were heartened about the number of people and organizations that stepped in to help this family, we hope that those efforts will continue, and that those who are truly empowered to protect these children will continue to do so diligently."

In its follow-up report, the prosecutor's office said the investigation "was extensive and protracted by some issues with obtaining records." Prosecutors reviewed evidence that included a surveillance video of the van at the garage, medical and school records for the children, and interviews with the surviving children.

The van was inoperable when it was seized by the Detroit Police Department, prosecutors said. Initially, the van was believed to have run out of gas, but a mechanical issue was found.

"Once a new battery was placed in the van, it was able to be turned on and tested. A carbon monoxide leak was detected within minutes in the van where the two children had been sleeping," prosecutors said.
