There are no longer any "shirts" no redshirts or medshirts etc.  So no greyshirts or grayshirts.  Let's just call it what it is ... a gap year.

This is how I understood it…they don’t enroll, they don’t do anything college, they train for a year basically. Then enroll the following year as if they were a recruit in the following class.

Dang he is an anomaly. That is surely young enough to get 6. Grey then 5. If I were Cael I would do it. This kid could be a undefeated 5 timer. Probably would lose a few this year.

That isn't an anomaly, that is a normal high school age. Most kids graduate as 18 year olds. Most high school kids could take a gap year.

Will this become a new trend with the 5 for 5 rule being introduced??

Levi Haines was the first to do this that I know of and it obviously paid off well for Forrest last season. Waylon Cressell is another example, looking forward to see what he does this season!

PSU currently has two studs who could take a grey shirt and still get 5 years of eligibility, Jayden James and Clinton Shepherd.

Back in the day guys like Pistol Pete and Eddie George would take post graduate years at military academy’s so it’s not a new phenomenon. Derek Stingley and Ryan Williams are more modern examples of highly recruited prospects who either graduated early or reclassified.

But with holdbacks becoming so common in wrestling and the new 5 for 5 rule instated I believe we’ll see an influx of top guys reclassing bc it’ll actually be beneficial to graduate at 17/18 now

Guess it depends on the kid, the coach, the team. Not sure it will be a norm, given the new rules, you need to meet some criteria to do it. Jayden James being so young (just turned 18 in June) helps out PSU due to the log jam of talent at those middle weights. If you’re a kid who can do it and means you don’t lose a year sitting behind someone, you’re probably nuts not too.
I’m hearing 157 Kasak (or Sealy if Kasak head/concussions is an issue), 165 Duke, 174 MM.

We shall see 🤷‍♂️

James isn't "so young". How old were you when you entered your senior year of high school? If you were 17, as most are, you could take a gap year.

I turned 18 in May of my senior year of high school, and there was nothing special about me. I was the same age as all my peers.

Likewise of myself and siblings:  two turned 18 after graduation - Nov & June, two during senior year - March & Jan.

My kids: one turned 18 after graduation - July and two during senior year- Jan & Nov.

When I graduated high school I was 18 years old. My college girlfriend who I met as as sophomore graduated high school the same year as I did. She was 14 months younger than me. My older brother graduated high school two years ahead of me and he is 14.5 months older than me. I am from Pennsylvania while my girlfriend was from New Jersey. New Jersey kids always seem to be younger when they graduate for whatever reason.

There are variances in admissions for children to start school between districts even within some states.  My son's birthday is Oct 3rd.  He was 3 days into the deadline to allow him to start kindergarten, so they give the option to either hold off or start, but he had to test in.  We decided to hold him back a year (nothing to do with wrestling shockingly!), so he will be 18 within about a month of starting his senior year of HS.  To me none of this is any near as crazy as everyone makes it seem.  Hell, for myself, I remember getting arrested my senior year with a bunch of my friends.  All my friends who were still <18 got their parents called to come get them.  I turned 18 early, so I got taken in and released, so my parents never found out!

Compared to whom?

I turned 18 in my senior year as I would imagine most of the "plumbers" here but that was in a time when there were very few holdbacks. Comparing wrestlers of today to these old bastards isn't near the same.

To his peers in high school.......

What percentage of DI wrestlers were held back? It is a small percentage, certainly nowhere near even half.
