Honestly I'd be open to rumors, but Grey's tenure hasn't been that good. Cupboard was full, he had two of the most popular wrestlers in America but their international stuff has gone pretty bad. They lost their prized pig (for the record everything about the situation makes me think less about Shapiro as opposed to CU), do they have anything exciting coming up? Upper weight (Correa?) and 133 seems to be on some lists, are these guys gonna be legit quick? Is Grey messing this up for just unlucky and in a situation where he doesn't have alot of breathing room?

I really think you have to wait for this season to draw any real conclusions. I listened to the Bader Show with Meyer Shapiro, and all I will say is that I'm not going to make any judgment against the coaching staff for how that whole thing played out. Grey and Cornell are still recruiting well and they could have a very good showing this year. They had an absolutely disastrous NCAA tournament with two 2 seeds not placing and a 3 seed taking 8th. If something like that repeats itself, then I think it's time to start asking questions.

I also would think that recruiting at an Ivy has become substantially more difficult when trying to sell the promise of future earnings vs some of the money being offered to recruits at other schools.

What was shapiro like in that interview? I didn't hear anyone mention it so I assumed it didn't have any real info.

I note that Cornell's Ethan Fernandez apparently was not offered enough in the portal for his grad season to forego a rumored (non-wrestling) job opportunity.

since I have been following the portal religiously, but do not know the individual situations, this is one that had me stymied.  that makes a ton of sense.

For my record-keeping purposes, is it accurate for me to note that he has "moved on"

Just a guess, but I think he was offered more by KPMG than, say, Iowa...

I have two thoughts here..

1. Why would anyone offer Ethan Fernandez a noteworthy amount of money? He's a solid D1 wrestler, but the schools with money aren't typically looking to pay a 5th year guy whose best finish is R16, especially at a weight as stacked as 149 will be this year.

2. There will, and should always be, high level athletes that put a higher level of priority on their life after wrestling than wrestling for the school offering them the most money for their 5 year career. Does Vega flip from Cornell pre-NIL? Maybe, maybe not. I'm guessing whatever amount he was offered to flip certainly helped though.

There wasn't really anything too inciteful.

He basically said that he didn't feel himself after the hospital scare in early 2025 and that he wanted to redshirt last year but that the coaches "convinced" him to compromise and just take the first semester off. He didn't say anything negative about Cornell, but just that he was lacking self-confidence and needed a new change of scenery.

What I essentially interpreted was that Meyer was upset and frustrated with his performance so far in his college career and he believes he needs a year away from competing to catch his breath and rediscover himself as a wrestler without worrying about results. He definitely has some negative feelings towards the way the Cornell coaching staff handled some things with him and believes he'll be in a better situation now. Just my read.

IIRC he said a few times about how he wanted to redshirt but the coaches supposedly were pushing him to wrestle.

Reading between the lines, could that have something do with how they seem to have a history of guys getting back to back concussions?

Do they have a bigger track record of concussion issues than other programs? I can only think of Yianni and Meyer, and I thought Meyer came into Cornell with those problems. I don't actually recall.

I severely doubt the Cornell coaching staff is stuck in the 80s as far as concussions go. Everyone freaked on the optics when shapiro wrestled after seeming off with the harvard kid, but to me it looked like they'd seen this act a lot. Not that he fakes a lot of concussion, just that he has a penchant for the dramatic.

Foca got multiple in one season IIRC.

And Jaxon Joy likely got concussed against Bassett and continued wrestling in a match that didn’t even count on his record.

Just did a quick search and forgot about how Julian Ramirez went into concussion protocol twice in the same match at the Patriot Open against a kid from George Mason while Ramirez wasn’t even enrolled.

Also in Patriot Open, Brett Ungar also called “dazed” by the ref then sent right back out.   Then has a lackluster rest of the season and does not wrestle in the postseason

hum maybe there is something to it then. Maybe Grey is a real hardass? Or too easily influenced by a hard ass assistant.

The staff prompted him to enter the portal. Maybe there are issues with Shapiro. Seems like he has some HEW. He is forgoing a year of eligibility and hoping to rediscover his love for wrestling (or something to that effect). Wrestling is a tough sport.

True that they had a bad tourney and some bad luck with concussions.  But the program is fine and I doubt anyone at Cornell is lacking confidence in the direction and leadership of the program.  Recruiting has been solid.

Prompted, as in recommended?  I didn’t get that impression, but who knows.    It seemed to me the taking a year off was more about trying to get fully healthy.

Why is Cornell's sudden demise even a topic. They have finished in the top 10 at nationals every year but last for the last 14 years, including a 2nd and a 3rd in '24 and '23. For those of you who suggest the cupboard is bare  this year's incoming freshman class sees three #1 ranked wrestlers (Cortez, Cortez, and Correa) a 3 ( Perentin), 2 5s (Jeter and Dellagatta) and a 2 10s ( Verrette and Diakomihalis) entering this year . (Whether or not Verrette Jeter enter as Freshman or elect to greyshirt does not diminish the fact that they are coming.

Frankly, when looking at Cornell wrestllng, you'd need to be wearing blinders to not see anything less than a top 10 program

Echoing this. Their bloodround was brutal to watch.  I think it was just bad luck and the chips didnt fall in their direction.  I expect Joy to be in the mix again..maybe not as high as #2 but AA at worst....does Cornella have another year (or two)?  What does their expected lineup look like?
