I think they can still grayshirt and be eligible for the 5th year somewhere else as long as they were not a holdback (or maybe it’s as long as they were not a double holdback?).  But looks like they can’t do the community college thing without losing the 5th year.

Although I guess the same applies everywhere, so I’m assuming we will see even more grayshirting from PSU…

Lots of log jams at PSU. 5 for 5 and the new rules did not help their cause. Gonna be interesting going forward.

Cornell is doing away with the TC3 route almost entirely. the way i understand it, it will be used rarely as opposed to the S.O.P. it has been the last decade or so.

what it means is that it will likely be more difficult to get kids in academically, and that they will also have to give the elite kids the pitch that they should come for 4 years, get their Ivy degree, then get a pay day for their 5th year in the portal. Which, to me, is a very sound plan.

time will tell.

Staff turnover can portend tumult. Boykin going to IMG seems like a lateral move at best, but more realistically a step down from Division I. Russell going back to Michigan when he came from Michigan was the most eye-opening.

Making Yianni an official assistant was the big move people wanted. Despite his notoriety, I can't see him usurping Grey due to their close relationship. Grey would need to leave on his own accord for this to happen rather than be pushed out. The new Cornell AD's relationship with the program is drastically different from the previous AD (who was the ex-wrestling coach) and she's shown the willingness to move on from underachieving coaches at a far greater propensity than her predecessor.

Grey still has a great relationship with the donors, but this could fray over time if other Ivies (Penn- newly flush with $20 mil) and resurgent Columbia overtake them. He's still recruiting well, and I don't see a move being made as long as that continues.

Interesting analysis.  Hard to believe that the AD or key alum/donors would consider Cornell wrestling or its coach as underachieving - every wrestling program has some disappointing matches and tournaments (possibly with one notable exception in recent years).

Why is Cornell's sudden demise even a topic. They have finished in the top 10 at nationals every year but last for the last 14 years,

You ask and then answer your own question.

They have been really good for a long time, and last year was their worst season in a long time.  That's where the questions come from.

To answer his question again, to you because you seem more interested in the nuance than some, when I read the recruiting wind, we've gotten to the point where I'd be surprised if Cornell pulled in a top 5 p4p recruit, and they used to have a good or outside shot on anyone. The Knox unpleasantness, Shapiro drama, what can only be described as Joy and Ruiz' failures at NCAAs (not to be a dick but i assume they wouldn't mind), plus not even the failure to lauch for vito and Yianni but their apparent regression is a lot of black marks when it comes to getting the type of guys you need to be at the level cornell was at for a long time.

I don't even think most of this is the staffs fault in any way, mitigating circumstances all around, but there is an arbitrary element to life and that means victims of circumstance.

I'm not sure what you mean. getting a #23 is good enough? I said I'm at the point where I would be outright surprised if they landed a top 5 guy, and you posted a list of recruits they didn't get. Also you threw in "that ain't on coach grey", after a post where I specifically said I doubted most of it was the staffs fault at all.

I'm coming from the perspective of Cornell being a team that was a real title threat at NCAAs on a few occasions(the current equivalent would be threat for 2nd) and I'd be sad if that doesn't continue, and the counter argument seems to be a bunch of evidence that they're still "pretty good".

Nobody outside of the likes of PSU, OSU, tOSU, and Iowa is getting top 5 p2p recruits any more, with rare exceptions.  So being surprised if *anyone* outside of those programs lands such a whale should be a given.

Michael Turi, as good a recruit as he is, was not going to start for Cornell at 149 for years, if ever.  Maybe he hadn't yet been accepted at all (see Knox, Anthony).  Maybe he didn't want to sit out a year at SCRTC.  De-committing from Cornell and going to Bloomsburg is even more odd than Knox going to Rutgers, and it likely has nothing to do with Grey or his staff.

The only times in the past twenty years that they've been a trophy threat were the Dake et al years some fifteen years ago, and the Foca/Ramirez/Cardenas/Vito years.  I guess that qualifies as "a few occasions."  I'm as big a fan (duh!) as any, and I can't see it happening even with the great current roster and commits.

It will be interesting to see if that holds with 5 for 5, and how easily it will be for athletes to transfer.

Yep.  No redshirts and lost eligibility for anyone who doesn't win a starting spot is a bit of a game changer for teams that stockpile talent.

Was a Cornell commit as far as I knew, looks like he’s at Bloomsburg now

If this guy got into Cornell and decided to change to Bloomsburg … I’m glad he did as his judgment is highly questionable.

I’m being a jerk I know. …. Perhaps some other circumstance (costs) or he didn’t get into Cornell is the explanation.

I’m pretty excited about the starting lineup.  Some great guys coming in from grey shirt.  Think it will be a fun year for the team.  Not saying trophy threat but top 10 again seems likely … at least to me.

yea giving up a payday for 4 years so you can pay 70K a year makes so much sense LOL

Could be wrong but my understanding is that unless you’re rich Cornell gives a ton of financial aid.

that is correct, 103.

if you're paying tuition while wrestling at Cornell, your family isn't hurting.

combine that with the fact that you can receive NIL at Cornell.

bad take by WrestlingRash.

Just tongue in cheek, I think most understand your point isn’t actually to denigrate the kid, but to reflect on how special an opportunity it is to get a Cornell degree and how much that sets you up for the next 40 years of your life vs. the same from Bloomsburg, which is very different, all in the name of continuing to wrestle. Obviously if you didn’t explain yourself then people would pile on, but that’s the world we live in I guess. Hopefully he made a good decision for himself overall

Institutions of higher learning offer pathways to pay for your education if you cannot afford it? Crazy others haven’t caught on yet!

A Cornell degree (especially if discounted from scholarships and aid) will do more for you in 40 years than some lump sum payments during your late teens and early twenties, especially if you aren’t learning how to handle that kind of money.
