while i am not a fan of watching women's wrestling, the fact they have it and it is a big thing is better for wrestling overall...

the overall ignorant attitudes towards greco in this country have been a thing since long before women's wrestling started to really take off...

Greco still better than women's wrestling. What has killed Greco is giving the women all of their money and opportunities.

Typical troll---Women's wrestling will save the sport in the long term---especially in the U.S/collegiate level. Having so many different styles and specialties does not help. 1 style world-wide would be best

Women's wrestling will save the sport how? It won't. Thats a low T beta male take. You think schools want to add another non revenue sport? you are dumb. suggesting that there should only be 1 style is damn near retarded.

I like your Greco news and info.

Knocking wrestling will get you no where.  Who cares about watching speed and agility anyway. wink

Wrestling gets “knocked” on this silly forum on the daily…

Some just pick and choose which wrestling is ok to “knock”…

I left the OTC right prior to the 2012 games.  It was very evident what changed.  They stopped incentivizing D1 All Americans to wrestle greco.  We had very good success with D1 guys.  When they stopped getting rewarded for wrestling greco, we started sliding.

100%...

i was not involved at the time, but, from what i have been told by those that were, when the OTC was "the place" in the oughts the US consistently brought home world medals in greco...

they practiced with the free guys regularly... it was one big room...

when the RTC model fractured that and most of everything became ran by colleges is when our greco fell off a cliff...

why do you think GR needs overseas opportunities and FS doesn't

(i agree with you. but why is that the case?)

primarily, the US just does not have the depth to provide a wide range of feels and styles within just our greco community... additionally, the US has one or two guys who can realistically win a weight domestically and there is a sizeable drop off after that... that does not breed anything but a familiarity that feeds into weak ass practices...

add in we do not have the coaching depth to provide real techniques that can be picked up by foreign athletes and their coaches...

some of the things i have seen some very respected domestic greco coaches try to show was horrifying... when otto had just turned 15 and gone full time greco an RTC coach was trying to show him something (i do not recall specifically but something related to a russian) and from the bleachers i was like WTF??? then otto turned around and looked at me and the look of horror on his face was hysterical... i have several stories very similar...

Free is just a TD contest for the most part... the US has plenty of depth in that arena coaching and athletically... none of them have a clue about par terre offense or defense, but, that is more a free thing and not just a US thing...

originally, i just assumed that WCAP would be the path... that was years ago...

after being around the program i quickly realized that was not a good developmental option at all...

every young guy that goes into the WCAP program just learns how to lose... the older guys who have so much more experience abuse them to a point where the young guys just fade away... it is not malicious thing by any means... it just a reality...

i think the other thing that the typical US wrestling "fan" really has no comprehension of is just how much more competitive greco is internationally than free is...

it is brutal... particularly the lower weights...

Max is still ranked #9 on the planet at 60kg based almost entirely off of finshing 13th at senior worlds last year... he did not make the senior team domestically this year so did not get any points from wrestling at pan ams... even so he is still top 10 on the planet because every one takes losses in international greco... getting bounced first match is just not that rare a thing...

every year at U23 worlds, there is a senior medalist that does not medal... last years senior bronze at 67kg a month before  went one and done at U23 worlds...

greco is just an entirely different beast due to the very nature of the sport...

we have 5 US wrestlers ranked in the top 10 on the planet and we have 3 others ranked in the top 20 (one 12th)...

no one in this country even knows about it...

we suck alot less than the average anonymous forum nerd has any clue, but, all they are told is that there is another senior world championship we did not medal at...

Boring, archaic, and self limiting style that only the unathletic rejects that couldn't cut it in the real wrestling styles participate in.

I don't think that's the case internationally. In countries that do both like Poland or Russia, I think it's just random (FS caucus regions aside). Whatever style has a gym close by (or you happen to get invited to) is most likely the one you will end up doing. In some other countries, Greco is the only option for men.

It is not even the case domestically, it is just one of the things that gets parroted by ignorant “fans” who do not understand the landscape at all…

For all of the hate that Greco gets, lots of top Senior and NCAA guys have compete it from youth through Fargo.  A lot of them also had success in it.  I believe it has value for someone who's focus is in Folk or free and wished people doing age level comp would wrestle it more.

i would respectfully point out that every senior level leg grabber that has tried to make a greco world team has failed...

obvious exception to that is Coon, but, heavy weight is a bit of an outlier...

Dake tried after getting bounced from trials at leg grabbing one year and went one and done at a last chance qualifier...

Dean same...

i watched Dan Dennis try greco several years ago because he lost a bet... he was grabbing legs to keep from getting thrown on his dome...

Zane Richards was a Senior World team member in free and has got to the finals of Trails in greco the last 2 years and is 0-4 combined in said finals...

Brock Hardy has been trying for several years now and has not sniffed a greco world team...

a quick very non-inclusive list of names whose last match in greco in high school was against otto- Luke Lilledahl, Aden Valencia, Zan Fugitt...

Strickenberger's last match in Greco was Fargo finals against Max...

the narrative about US greco that the anonymous nerds would have you believe is far from the reality...

can anyone guess what the only tournament Luke Lilledahl did not place in in his entire life?

(insert Final Jeopardy music)

U17 Greco Tallin Open in Estonia...

the year  Bo Bassett won U17 World gold in free was also on the greco team went one and done and teched in 1 minute in greco by a russian who has not represented russia since...

the narrative about greco that the anonymous nerds would have you believe is far from the reality...

I watched Greco during last Olympics and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. The subtleties of positioning are crazy. It really is a case of executing a move even though your opponent knows it’s coming. Versus folk/free which has a lot more elements of surprise. Not that I know what I’m talking about, it just seems that way.

I would absolutely watch more Greco wrestling. The coverage and promotion is abysmal.

do not wait for what constitutes as the wrestling media in the US to sell you on greco... you would have better luck telling a woman to "calm down"

watching the medal rounds of any high level international competition in greco would change the majority of wrestling "fans" in this country's minds who are totally trained to think backing up is a real strategy and playing the edge equals wrestling acumen...

whatever...

i did not realize i had tomorrow off and a 3 day weekend until about noon-ish my time today...

point being, i am celebrating our country's 250th bday early...

thinking about this thread...

years ago at the US Open Jordan Williams was walking up the bleachers and came up on our clan...

i have been around JW since me and boys discovered wrestling when max was 6 and otto 4...

JW was a 3Xer in HS... 3X Fargo champ... won super 32... he did the damn thing as a kid...

has had his issues since but who hasn't anyone who wasn't a little wild...

regardless...

JW noticed us while walking up the bleachers and then named everyone of the wrestlers in our group (10 ish) every one of them even though some of them had never placed at a national tourney ever...

it impressed me... i have been a fan ever since...

anyway...

JW made the comment how greco guys scared him... he tried to jokingly pull a Russian on a greco guy at the US Open and the look on the dudes face told JW he better walk away...

JW made his first international appearance about a month ago...

this story is from 4+ years ago

he realized greco guys were different and did not travel out of the country for another 5 years...

international greco guys are legitimately scary...

any anonymous nerd who claims wrestling is "tough" and builds "character" and "creates men" and simultaneously dogs greco should be laughed at and dismissed...

even our guys who wrestle the women's style in this country know the real deal...

This match popped up on my YouTube feed yesterday… all I could think was, I bet LJB was yelling at the ref about Strickenberger’s singlet not being state-sanctioned until he made him change it mid-match. 😂
