Stiles?

Meyer would tech paddy/birden. Were they referring to Stiles? I still think stiles would beat both if they are same size

I have always thought of Michigan as one of the schools who work hard not to work hard in a match. The Mantanona brothers are different in this respect. This is just an opinion.

Not sure it’s opinion anymore. I’m a massive Michigan fan, and the product under Bormet has been…frustrating, to say the least. The room appears to be being taught to try to win matches 4-1 in the closing seconds of the match. I cannot stand it and I feel abundantly confident it has left points and Ws on the mat for us. I hated watching the lumbering, slow play of the Cam Amine’s and Will Lewan’s of the rosters. It feels like it’s being forced on every wrestler that shows up. In a sport where every single position is both offense and defense, I cannot fathom why defense is being leaned on.

I hope the program continues to get good guys and put out good performances, but I have plenty of gripes about our current staff and how they prepare their lineup for the season, as well as the development of our wrestlers. Don’t think Bormet is done anytime soon, though, and even if he is I think Churella gets ushered in behind him to take over.

Not sure the AD would have any idea who to hire if they were trying to make a big name/splash hire to turn the tide or make some waves, honestly. Very much in the Iowa mold of continuing to hire Michigan guys from history who have performed well.

Side note: Dave Bolyard has been doing this a long ass time and I read recently that his salary was only like $40-$50k a year. Sheesh

I'm not being sarcastic, but who is a guy that redshirted after 3 years in a college room and came back better? It's one of the reasons I wasn't a big fan of Vtech shelfing Henson this year. I have no doubt that he'll be very good next year, but I do wonder if he'll be the same guy he was before.

I understand a TRFR year RS, the guys are still hungry and likely to make big jumps with a strong hunger to get ready to compete in college, but it doesn't seem like it has a similar effect on guys that have already been through the grind multiple years. I can't help but wonder if a year away from active competition makes it harder to get back into the grind of weekly weigh-ins, intentional practice each day, etc. I think a year out of competition can have a negative impact on a guys hunger. It's not as simple as turning it on and off. Once you've turned it off for the first time in your life, I don't think it comes back as strong for a lot of guys.

Quality post and I agree wholeheartedly, even as it pertains outside of Meyer Shapiro or Caleb Hendon. Not to say it can’t work, but I tend to agree that you want to capture the momentum of the wrestler’s knowledge, tenacity/drive/desire, and trajectory. Putting a hard stop in the middle of a multi-year build like that is usually going to have some detriments.

Regardless, I believe both Henson and Shapiro will AA the next season they wrestle. Henson is as good as they come, so I expect him to be a high AA and possibly be in the finals (clearly has the ability to win it all). I don’t think Shapiro ever improves his positioning to the NCAA finals, though. 3rd, 5th, and MFF to 8th. My guess is he finishes around 3-5 again.

Yeah I’m probably just a hater, but I’m not thoroughly impressed by either Gallagher or Birden. Not to say they can’t perform better in coming years or improve, but I felt like Paddy was a weak point in past lineups and Birden felt like a disappointment when I did get to see him wrestle. Michigan fan tho, so maybe I’m just being a homer? Usually fairly good at being objective, tho, especially in wrestling. OSU has a good staff and room tho, so growth from Birden is expected (Paddy is almost done or is done, right? Seeking a med shirt or something?)

Catrabone needs time.  He is one season up from 149lbs.

Didn’t look impressively large at 157 last season, either. And I’d be concerned for a fairy significant drop off in production if he bumped weights without the strength, despite his style. Idk that he can outwrestle people that much larger than him, but perhaps he makes a big leap in the off season in both weight and putting more tools in the box. Certainly wouldn’t pass on Shapiro.

Cam can be fun to watch; he’s not quite as funky as Askren, and he’s existing at a time when a lot more guys are doing that stuff, but he’s at his best when you are touching him and he’s able to manipulate pressures and angles and scramble for 2, 3, 5 points, etc. My dig is that he needs more consistency in neutral and on top to dominate. Having that scramble ability be an elite tool is going to carry him far, but he needs to be a wrestle in front of that and not plan on that as his game-plan to win matches.

He wrestled Cardenas from Stanford a few times last season, once scrambling a few times to score big points and losing I think like 11-10, and then they met again on the back half of a bracket I think and he got majored or tech’d or something (CKLV maybe?). The best guys in the sport are consistent. He just needs to get there and he can become an even bigger issue for people.

Last year and the year before, maybe. Meyer isn't what people thought he would be, or anywhere close to it.

This year's version of Meyer Shapiro isn't beating many AA 165s, let alone teching them. MM, a guy who is actually a 165 and has lost once in college, has put up 12 points and 10 points on Paddy in the two matches they actually wrestled (the third being an IN DEF).

I get that styles make matches but if Meyer Shapiro (who lost to Swisher (R12), Watters (6) and Webster (5) this year, by the way) wrestles Paddy Gallagher, he might lose. I have a very hard time imagining him scoring double digit points, and I would bet a lot of money that he doesn't TF him.

Some voice of reason!  Paddy is a very hard hand fight and Meyer is a finesse type guy.  I think Paddy would break Meyer and win a close one.  Don't have enough data on Birden to have an opinion.

Gallagher isn't breaking anybody.

I agree that might be a stretch, but, I also have a very, very hard time imagining Meyer Shapiro beating him handily when Mitchell Mesenbrink couldn't tech him.

That struck me as odd, was that one of those matches where mesenbrink stayed on top the whole time?

Paddy is a poor example, I think.  Shapiro was dominating 157lbs when they were both at 157lbs.

He'll have a rough go against guys like Garvin.

Well i hope Jackson is making like 6 or 7k. Its hard to mention him around wrestling people without them lapsing into how he is a terrible coach they don't like personally.

I was wondering about him and what people had to say about him. He was obviously a gifted wrestler, but his coaching history doesn't show a ton of transference of that knowledge and ability on to others
