I’ve read this.

I also read the part where he says his wrestlers called him and told him them were going to put their names in to see what they were worth. Seems like an odd thing to say if you’ve already found that out, no?

Ah, then you missed the part that says “but nothing could be verified without hitting the portal, so here we are.”

Re Ayers and Stanford as underdog: I have hard time feeling sorry these guys. The place grooms our overlords.

I’m no fan of the “elite” network effect these schools have and promote, but what’s your solution, cut the program? Might as well cut the Ivy League and others while your at it.

Yeah, idk. I guess Ayers needs to hustle. Find one alumni in the billionaires' club who wouldnt miss the however-many-millions it would take to run the program? The tech-bros seem to idolize tough guys, so...

But ISU was recruiting these guys all week in Cleveland, can’t believe they forgot to talk NIL.

Why are you being intentionally ignorant? He said the guys were told numbers ($200k) but they needed to go in the portal to be able to verify they were real numbers. They can’t get the official offers on paper until they are in the portal.

Sounds like going to church.

Who has ISU landed as a transfer that was labeled “do not contact”?

Elam IIRC.  Maybe he wasn’t do not contact but he announced he was going to ISU less than 24 hours after going on the portal I believe.

Alirez at Northern Colorado. Probably others but that was a high profile one.

According to the Iowa message board at the time, Alirez stayed because Penn St paid his NIL at NoCo so he wouldn't go to Iowa.  One of my favourite internet rumors when I used to read the Penn St/Iowa boards

Irrationally proud former WPIAL wrestler

No Scotland, No Party . . . Go Beavs

Good example, forgot about that, although that didn’t really end well for him.  And wasn’t there rumors that he was promised a coaching job or something?  But I don’t think he is one yet.  Do they even still have an RTC?  Their website according to USAW links to some weird shopping site in another language.

Sure, I am sure Ayres mentioned ISU and $200k for no reason.

Listen, I know for a FACT, there are 3 schools that were at nationals talking to kids at smaller schools about transferring. I I will not mention the schools, 2 of them are desperate right now to get some winners. I am not doubting ISU is talking to kids about transferring and they are not in the portal yet.  My point, alot of schools are doing it. This has been happening since the NIL started, again, facts. Until NCAA starts punishing these larger schools, it will contine to happen. If TK Davis does not portal, I tip my cap to that kid, and to Gardner Webb, because they had to come up with some cash

Put a couple million into wrestling and get no return vs. invest in the next moonshot company and return 10000X your money. hard choice.

Ayers sounds like every wrestler I've ever known who got dumped by their girlfriend. A fighter through and through, determined to solve the problem rather than to realize she is already gone. If he was smart, he would try to get hired at another D1 school as soon as possible. He is still riding the train of Koll's recruiting classes. Smart to sell when you are at an all time high rather than riding the wave back down to 0.

Yeah but the pilot for Artemis II is a Cal Poly wrestler so investing in wrestling might just get that 10000X no?

Not saying this is what happened in the situation you describe above, but often they skirt the rule by having "friends of the program" do the outreach. For example, the NCAA can't tell the parent of a wrestler on a team who they can and cannot informally talk to on other teams.

not for the person writing the check. I've raised a lot of money in my career, and ROI is one metric that sophisticated investors care about. Silicon Valley doesn't have many hick rich people willing to buoy up a wrestling program. They are shrewd investors. Ayers mentioned they are still collecting on the 12M that people pledged when the program was dropped. I would guess they got about 1M of that, best case scenario.

Youre right because the moonshot gives them something these dudes crave even more than ROI: the action.

There was an asst. coach that was talking to a kid at nationals that was not in the portal, and to my knowledge still isnt.
