Why do we expect all of these guys to take the extra year of eligibility such Cesar Alvan? There is no outcome on planet earth where he would go through his list of guys and place as high as he did again. He should take his 3rd and finish on a high note. He hits the portal, it’s more likely he finishes like Rocky Elam, Jacori Teemer, Jaydin Eierman, Nelson Brands, Lucas Byrd than how he did.

Why do you expect these guys to think like you do?

I am not sure who is expecting kids to always take more eligibility. Wrestling is hard and most people, while knee deep in it, can't wait for it to end. The season is a grind, always has been.

It's ultimately up to him, if he feels satisfied in his wrestling career and doesn't have that drive anymore then he should hang it up. Look at Byrd, I don't think he had the same kind of hunger and drive he did last year and he ended up performing below expectations. It's really hard to regain that drive to prove something once you lose it.

Can't remember where I heard it, but it was reported that he didn't really want to compete this year, but was talked into it by the coaching staff.  I don't know if that's true or not, but it sounds feasible.  Especially since he was a senior last year (he's a grad student now) and would've ended his career a NCAA champ.

TJ Sewell was a 3X AA at OU and actually lost to Sean O'Day in the Finals, said the same thing, "It is hard! I was ready for it to end. I was also ready to go get a job and act like normal people."

I don't think anyone expects someone to take an extra year, but at the end of the day this is a form of entertainment so its natural for fans to want the best guys to compete as long as possible.

The OP named the guys who it didn't work out on the mat.  It has worked for others (Taye, McNeil, Buchanan) but if the $$ rumors are true, it could be possible that 1 more year on the mat might be more $$ than his first job offer.

Wrestling is hard af if you’ve never done it’s easy to sit back and go “wrestle more, obviously”

Would be fascinated to know how many wrestling fans were wrestlers at one point. Not 100% that’s for sure. But probably a higher percentage than football fans for example.

I think the big thing is if you have F/S aspirations. With NIL and RTC I look at it differently now. Coming out of high school you might think I am going to wrestle for another 12-years. Where do I want to do that. The idea of 4 or 5 seems to not even factor in to me.

To be fair, I'd lose all motivation too if I won a championship and a year later I pretty clearly wasn't in the top 4 of my weight class.

It's really tough having to walk away from the sport before you are ready to, mentally or physically. Chances of winning sometimes doesn't matter as much as challenging yourself or staying with it if you still have more to give. Lucas Byrd said before the tournament that he already got his title and this is all gravy. Just wanted to enjoy the ride one last time before stepping away from folkstyle competition.

I'm not surprised I was in a similar position. I lost in the blood round at fargo as a senior then lost in the blood round at juco nationals. Once I placed the next year I was pretty much satisfied and then kind of dragged my feet when I ended up going D3
