She should be coming back next year, but at 57kg as was reported a few months ago. I'm sure she's just lifting and gaining strength while training and acclimating to the new weight.

Kids would get ridiculed for being held back once upon a time, but I can see why some parents may opt to do it for athletic reasons or bullying reasons or whatever. Also, you gotta love the offseason here. How'd we get to talking about this?

I'm with Peebs. I like TnT as wrestlers and ambassadors to the sport, and love their commitment to their guys; my critique is with the coaching and culture at Iowa, as I don't believe "emulate Gable" works super well in today's environment. Would love to see whoever the next hc is, whenever that happens, to be an outsider who wasn't molded in and married to the Iowa Style as if it were gospel... or at least Iowa alums who've had enough of a change of scenery (Metcalf, DSJ, Ramos, etc.) to know what works/what doesn't and evolve Iowa Style. All of that being said, people calling for Brands to step down over the BB thing need to get a grip. Imagine having so much juice as a hs recruit that you can get the head coach of a Top 3 program replaced. Foh with that.

Maybe we’re quibbling over the definition of “extremely common.” A 12-year old study put the number of kindergarten redshirts at ~5%, and I’m sure it’s only gone up since then. I’d agree a holdback in middle school or something purely for athletic reasons is not common, but redshirting kindergarten is, and often isn’t even really for the purpose of athletics.

Point is. Those that can do. And those that can’t teach … except for a select few.

I will start counting and circle back!

Good stuff, I was hoping that you still read this forum. Is Fujinami coming back next year? I should've tagged you in this other thread

A small part of my post got deleted earlier so I'll be brief: I have a very strong feeling that many of the boosters, deep down, are more comfortable being a near lock at 2nd-4th (and the rare 5th) than taking a gamble on the new and unknown. I believe I read a post on HR in the past where Bob claimed he would be "done when Tom's done" so whoever the next coach is better generate an elephant's worth of eggcitement in order to keep the cash flowing

Spencer Lee for player-coach, ASAP. I'm telling you, if Iowa waits too long Ohio State is going to make him a offer he can't refuse...

It's not extremely common. Wrestlers do it and that's about it, until other athletes start doing it and it snowballs. It's not a good trend either, delaying your kids start of school because you want them to be more mature than the others. The remainder have the choice of also hindering their starts or being behind the increasingly higher number of kids doing this for an athletic or developmental advantage. I mentioned this to my colleagues here in Ohio, and they were dumbfounded that it's normal practice for wrestlers. One of them recalled that their state champion classmate was held back after I said it, and that it was a secret to everyone in the grade. One mentioned his kids team getting walloped by a team of handpicked older kids ruining the league for everyone. I'd personally be embarrassed being a 19 year old senior year. What the hell are they doing in high school still? Move on to college and stop playing with the kiddies.

I think this is a great summation. When the Taylor to Iowa rumors were swirling, i was pro. Outside of him, I don't think there's a candidate that moves the needle that way available right now. Even Burroughs, who has only just in the last month expressed any interest in coaching.

To my knowledge, USA Wrestling never even acknowledged Kyle Snyder's arrest. I figured they would've posted something when he was temporarily suspended by SafeSport. (Kudos to FloWrestling.org for posting the story.) But, nope, the adults at USA Wrestling just closed their eyes, put their fingers in their ears and held their collective breath until the suspension was lifted. So, yeah, It's tough for me to blame the journalists when our programs don't want to act like their in charge.

When you have a phone that can find Iran very easily, why teach that in school. This goes for basic math facts as well. Many HS'ers are ignorant of basic math facts because we can do that stuff on a calculator easily. Schools say they want to teach critical thinking but how can you think critically if you don't know the basic facts with which to think critically with? The schools are failing the kids. mspart
