"Not top schools" might even start questioning the value of burning a scholarship on a HS kid and developing him, just to have him transfer away. It might make more sense to let kids develop at top schools for a couple of years, then pick them up on scholarship. With that said, this is all speculation and thinking aloud. It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out over time. We're in the infancy of this new era, and it's going to take some trial and error by teams to figure out what works.

I think it'll be something like this: At "top schools" 1) Get recruited on scholarship --> make the starting lineup --> Get NIL 2) Get recruited on scholarship -> don't make starting lineup -> Be "room guy" on scholarship 3) Get recruited on scholarship -> don't make starting lineup -> Transfer to where can make starting lineup on scholarship At "not top schools" 1) Get recruited on scholarship -> succeed -> transfer to top school for NIL 2) Get recruited on scholarship -> don't succeed -> pull scholarship to use on non-starter transfer from top school/ next recruiting class This was basically what I was talking about on the tax thread.. making collectives not tax deductible was a gift to athletic departments.

Building a railroad from The Pacific to the Indian Ocean
DJT replied to Paul158's topic in Non Wrestling Topics
I don’t get it. What’s wrong with building a railroad from the Pacific across the Indian Ocean? Sounds like a great plan that will create a lot of good paying jobs. And a solar plant in Angola, NY? I don’t see any problem with that as long as it doesn’t have a solar spill and pollute Lake Erie. -
At top schools, scholarship athletes will be the “room guys”.

And if we’re lucky, we can get down to 29 teams and be in the company of fencing… if we really try, we can get to 22 like water polo or 17 like rifle.

I don’t have a school/team that I support. Yes, they can choose to get an education wherever they want, and that coach can determine if it’s worth a scholarship or not to allow him to wrestle there. It is no different than a good wrestler who grew up dreaming of going to Yale, but they don’t have a wrestling team. He can choose to go there and not wrestle, or he can go elsewhere and wrestle. Depends on his priorities. It’s more about preserving the sport as a whole before it becomes a truly niche sport with only 30 D-1 teams. Obviously, there should be exemptions carved out for coaching changes and grad transfers.

Perhaps the way to limit transfers would be any transfer counts as 1 toward the 9.9 scholarships, whether they get scholarship money or not. Not sure if that would help or hurt smaller schools… a lot of moving parts to consider.

I didn’t realize there was investment talk on this forum… I’ve been asking for advice on the other message board I frequent. Does this look like good advice?

Sounds like my neighbor across the street. Was he shirtless? And was this at like 7am on Tuesday? I stopped home from work at about 9am on my way to a jobsite the other day, and he’s in his driveway, shirtless, beer in hand and grilling… I come home 7-8 hours later, he’s still in his driveway, shirtless (now sunburned to shit), beer in hand, passed out in a lawn chair. I start walking to my mailbox, and I hear, “No mail. Drove by. Didn’t stop.” “Thanks, Chris. You should probably get out of the sun. You look like a f’ing tomato. Or not.. YOLO.”

Unfortunately, he saw it but was blinded by it…. Then he was revved up like a douche… or maybe it was a deuce. And ran in the night or something.

I didn’t mean to come across as hostile as it may have read responding to buckshot. I’m assuming he didn’t realize the connection between MatScouts and Intermat. My apologies. A similar thing happened on the Wisconsin forums. I hadn’t looked at them in five years, and when I did this season, I was confused by all of the linked paywall content that had never been allowed… Apparently, wiwrestling was taken over by wiwrestle or some such thing.

You mean you think a 4th placer can take out an unproven freshman but a returning multiple champ and former champ can’t? Don’t you know this forum is for serious discussion, not a place for sarcasm?
-
What did I miss? Did they street fight in the Casey’s parking lot or something? The pizza really isn’t good enough to be worth catching a battery charge over.

Now he can go back to having true “Iowa Style” practices with three hours of live wrestling followed by two hours of buddy carries up CHA steps. When you have this much talent, who cares if you burn out and injure your starters by Christmas. Next man up!

The Division I five-year clock starts when you step on any college campus (after HS graduation), and one can compete in NCAA competition four of the next five calendar years (I.e. If you start school and quit, your clock keeps running). COVID added a year to the clock and competition years. You could not wrestle four years of NWCA then four years of NCAA without compromising the space-time continuum, and that would be bad for everyone, I imagine.

Sure you can in Greco. I remember Trent Paulson was going to launch me in a reverse lift off a par terre start at Northern Plains, and I was just like, “Nope.. not today,” reached back and scooped his legs up. I think it cost me something like 3 and caution 2, but I didn’t get posterized. I laughed. The ref laughed. Paulson was probably annoyed.

Just pointing out that MatScouts is affiliated with Intermat (Willie owns both), so, of course, he can promote the paywall content on here. It’s not like CP is on here posting links to paywall Flo articles.

Do you see the tab on the top of the page labeled “MatScouts”? (Or in the drop-down menu if you’re on mobile) Husker-Du and BobDole are why you’re on this forum… well, and Al Gore. Can’t forget about Al Gore.

Come on, Flow. You're not even trying now.
DJT replied to Mike Parrish's topic in International Wrestling
I'm really behind on them. I think the last ones I saw was Bad Blood and Gilman: Love Me or Hate Me... I let my subscription expire sometime during the authoritarianism practice run. -

The FloFilms are the only part I miss about having a subscription. They've all been superb. They should probably put them up on Amazon. I know I'd be willing to drop ~$10/each to have them in my Amazon library, as would many people who will never buy a subscription. -

So it stalling or not? I mean, you have to break the guy down to attempt to pin him.. what if the guy keeps basing up before you can attempt a pinning combination? Is a breakdown in and of itself part of attempting to pin? Will repeated breakdowns satisfy the new requirement for the top man to attempt to pin? Will bottom wrestlers be able to draw stall calls just by bellying out and basing up and not really attempting to escape?
