  1. Used up all the scholarship money on the last class and only one in-state kid on the list. …Cael will probably get all 7 PA kids to walk-on at PSU, though.
  2. What happens when you adjust the placement points with the placewinners who graduated removed? (I.e. Kerkvliet goes from 2nd to 1st bc Parris graduated)
  3. The $2k number was 1992 til now… the $1k was 1987 til now… just used the year stated in the article, though 1989 would’ve been more appropriate as it referred to his budget lifestyle coming after he won the Olympics.
  4. $1,000 in 1987 is $2,657.01 today… probably not making it rain at the strip club every weekend but still not living on Ramen.
  5. You are correct: John Smith won his first world title in 1987 while he was still in college, one year later he won an Olympic Gold. After that, silver was not an option. Smith details the way he lived his life and the adjustments that he had to make along the way to keep himself sharp and to give him a mental edge. Even though he was doing well financially, Smith decided to give himself a budget of $1000/month to live on. https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/5055801-john-smith-what-drives-winning The internet is pretty amazing. Thank you, Mr. Gore.
  6. $2,000 in 1992 would be $4,302.72 today. That’s about what I spend a month, and I’m perpetually distracted.
  7. Ease up on the Bud Light, Dylan. Do you honestly understand any ref’s interpretation of stalling? The most honest interpretation I’ve heard from a ref is, “I don’t know how to describe porn, but I know it when I see it, and the same goes for stalling.” However, each ref’s interpretation of stalling seems to depend on who is winning, how loud the crowd is, how much time is on the clock, whether Tom Brands knows his home address and/or place of employment, etc.
  8. Mike Grey addressed the step out (called it out of bounds rule). He said it would appear as a move towards freestyle, and we can’t have that because it would make too many people bitch on the message boards. I’m pretty sure all of you anti-freestyle posters are just Russian trolls trying to keep the American team in check… don’t you have an election to steal or something? …just imagine if US wrestlers competed in freestyle their whole lives, instead of (mostly) folkstyle until they’re 23.
  9. If a non-athlete student (say, a student who is a comedian, model, video game player, etc.) is allowed to profit on his/her NIL, so should a student-athlete… or should expel that kid who gets sponsors for his YouTube stand-up gig, because he wants to make money while getting an education?
  10. Pin=30 Tech=25 Dec=10+MOV … though a team with 3 wins by pin could win 90-77… but aren’t we looking to emphasize/reward scoring and pinning?
  11. 3-point takedown and riding time change should eliminate 95% of the 2-2 and 3-3 overtime matches…. Not a bad thing. I’d like to see stalling in referee’s position give the offended wrestler a point and option to go neutral (no additional escape point) or stay in current position.
  12. I think the way to go would to rethink the whole schedule for the season. November-December Open Tournaments/ Invitationals/ Duals This would be a “wrestle at your own pace” sort of time, where the only concern would be getting ready to peak for the individual championships (and pass finals, I suppose). There might be some ducking/ no-shows in duals, but that’s par for course with the whole season right now. 2nd Week of January Individual Qualifying Tournaments I’d say have regional qualifiers for NCAA tournament instead of the awkward conference allocations. Of course we still want conference championships, which would fit in with the first “phase” of the season in December. Last Week of January NCAA Individual Championship Tournament Not much going on for sports outside of NFL playoffs… would help with drawing some TV viewership. With a bit less of a grind leading up to the tournament, wrestlers won’t be so beat up/ worn down and could perform at a higher level. Yeah, it’s in the middle of winter, so let’s hope for some Orlando, Dallas, Phoenix bids for the tournament . February Dual Meets This is a tough time to get fans in the seats with HS states series, especially when you drive 3-4 hours on a Sunday just to see a backup wrestle instead of an All-American. With the individual championships done, there will be less ducking, and more of a chance to see some bumping around for “super matches”. Wrestlers would have current “credentials” to promote duals… and might see some revenge matches from the tournament. March NCAA Team Championship Tournament (Duals) - Every team in 64-team bracket w/ pigtails. -> Week 1 - Elimination Round (Pig Tail/ Round of 64) Hosted at higher seed (32 locations) -> Week 2 - Regionals (Round of 32 and 16) Hosted at eight sites, whether high seed or predetermined. -> Week 4 - NCAA Team Championships “Elite 8” (Quarters/ Semis/ Finals) Hosted at predetermined site over 2 days. Let’s crown a true team champion in a competition that’s marketable to someone who doesn’t want to spend 30 hours over three days watching eight matches going on at once. I don’t give two shits about women’s hockey, but I still watched the Badgers women’s championship game… if I happen to flip to a track and field meet, if a Wisconsin athlete is on at that moment, I might watch it until they’re done then move on because I don’t care about random people running in circles. I’m assuming there are a lot of people out there with similar sensibilities when it comes to “their team” regardless of the sport. Obviously, there are some flaws/ potential gripes to this. I’m sure I could add another 5000 words of details and/or tidying it up better, but I’ll leave it at this for discussion’s sake.
