Sounds about right. Grad transfer, change of scenery, not being on Dresser's good side after the disciplinary issues, also I am guessing that Oz will be going down to 125 next year?
I'm ambivalent about Starocci BUT... just saying... if he whiffs on #5 it'll probably save us from a bunch of fussing and nitpicking every time one of those GOAT discussions comes up
I feel like the 11-13s specifically are always set up to rack up some tournament points (esp if they're underseeded) just by nature of the way the brackets fall. Here are my greyhorse picks. Not very exciting.
125 - #15 Maximo Renteria (ORST)
133 - #11 Evan Frost (ISU)
141 - #12 Sam Latona (VT)
149 - #11 Sammy Alvarez (RID)
157 - #10 Ethen Miller (UMD)
165 - #14 Drake Rhodes (SDSU)
174 - #13 Cade DeVos (SDSU)
184 - #11 Gabe Arnold (IOWA)
197 - #14 Zach Glazier (SDSU)
285 - #13 Seth Nevills (UMD)
I'd take that bet. Zero chance Buchannon and Stevenson wins. (apologies to @ionel for posting this)
Seriously though, I'd be interested in seeing how much the lines move over the next few days.
Thanks for pulling this together and for detailing your methodology. How many cycles did you simulate each round & combination in the bracket before landing on a final probability? Just wondering. It's pretty amazing that we have the ability to do this from our desktops in this day and age.
That's true, but I feel like the B1G factor is offset by 4-weight Dake and that his bonus % would likely be higher if he competed in the 3pt takedown era.
Starocci should get some credit for chasing after #5, yes, but the problem is that none of the four-timers even had the opportunity to do so.
Also, Dake won at four different weights and got his first as a TF. I believe Starocci had both a redshirt year and a free Covid year.
My probably-idiotic theory is that Caliendo wrestled a much tougher match at Big Tens because he had a lot more time off the scales than he did during prior matches against Mesenbrink. Cal on Saturday night at NCAAs, if he makes it there, will be a full-sized, fully hydrated and nourished, strong as an ox Caliendo. It still may not be enough to take out MM, but I think he'll have his best chance then.
Idk anything about him, but with D1 wrestling being what it is these days why not go back to the pre-1980 or whatever format and give an AQ spot or two to the D2/D3 champs & runners-up? It would be fun to see those guys bang with D1 wrestlers and maybe cause some bracket chaos. Perhaps earn a D1 NIL opportunity in the process. Hopefully it wouldn't ruin D2 & D3 wrestling, but I assume they're getting looks all the same from the bigger programs looking for transfers.
Bit of a long shot but I'd love to see Kennedy and Arnold make a deep runs at NCAAs and finish with high AAs, just because there aren't enough question marks and drama about 174/184 at Iowa for next season. Seriously though, it would be nice to see them finish the tournament strong and stand their ground at their spots in the lineup, or at least up their stock for one to land a worthwhile transfer deal.
But I was talking about making the finals. Just to get to one of those two guys on the other side, Ramos would have to go through some possible combo of Renteria, Steevo, Sprat, Strick, Flynn, Ventresca... that's pretty rough.
Yianni telling Quint after the semis that he needs to grow some nuts
Cory Clark spilling the beans and saying that Terry asked him to pick him up and slam him
Zain quoting Braveheart "you can take away my life, but you'll never take away my freedom"... after being asked what it was like being taken down in the finals
(No shade, all great kids, and I've definitely said stupider things after a match with far less at stake)
