Coach Manning calling a spade a spade!
CHROMEBIRD replied to jajensen09's topic in College Wrestling
I agree, it's exactly what Manning was getting at. Not to give PSU a free pass but to be fair, it sounded like Suriano really wanted to wrestle, fractured ankle and all, and the coaches didn't want him risking his health. So, they probably gave him up until the last minute to prove he could go. Tough situation for all. Not sure why they didn't reseed the bracket before to the first session. They'd have to do it anyway if someone missed weight. -

IIRC Carl announced the afternoon before the start of the tournament that Suriano would be held out. I don't think an alternate was slotted in. Suriano was onsite and there were rumors up until the first session that he would weigh-in and go anyway -
Is Baji still training? I couldn't tell if he quit after Singh took over their federation

I never really paid attention to the alternates, but it's pretty wild that Bubba Wilson is listed as the 2nd alt. Also not sure why 197 only has one alt. 125 1st Alternate: Anthony Molton (Campbell) 2nd Alternate: Jack Maida (American) 133 1st Alternate: Vincent Santaniello (Pittsburgh) 2nd Alternate: Gabe Whisenhunt (Oregon State) 141 1st Alternate: Jacob Brya (Northern Illinois) 2nd Alternate: Ryan Sullivan (Clarion) 149 1st Alternate: Maxwell Petersen (North Dakota State) 2nd Alternate: Nash Singleton (Oregon State) 157 1st Alternate: Tanner Peake (Davidson) 2nd Alternate: Nathan Lukez (Army West Point) 165 1st Alternate: Cael Carlson (Oklahoma) 2nd Alternate: Cody Walsh (Drexel) 174 1st Alternate: Tyler Brennan (Arkansas-Little Rock) 2nd Alternate: Bubba Wilson (Nebraska) 184 1st Alternate: Dennis Robin (West Virginia) 2nd Alternate: Troy Fisher (Northwestern) 197 1st Alternate: Blake Schaffer (Kent State) 2nd Alternate: [None] 285 1st Alternate: William Jarrell (American) 2nd Alternate: Luke Rasmussen (South Dakota State)

Gold U17/U20/U23 medalists (MM, Shapiro, Blaze, etc.) qualify for MFS trials. I think it's different for WFS since Kennedy Blades, Audrey Jimenez, and some others are qualified.

Coach Manning calling a spade a spade!
CHROMEBIRD replied to jajensen09's topic in College Wrestling
I think the point people are missing is that Manning needs to update his Twitter profile pic -
Idk about that. Fix get more than his fair share of hate, but if he loses this week it won't be anywhere near the shade that Spencer got. Fix has been killin it this season but he's been flying a little bit under the radar (in terms of buzz, I mean). Part of it is also the fans. The Hawkeye fanbase, myself included, had Spencer anointed as the chosen one and assumed he'd cruise his way to 4 titles. My jaw was on the floor when he lost to Ramos. OTOH, Fix could finally win a title or finish without one, either outcome wouldn't be very shocking to anyone. So, not much fuel for haters to burn him at the stake.

Hopefully Vito doesn't jeopardize his chances at making the Olympic team by competing at Nationals. Not a ton of time to get healthy and refocus on FS and descend to 57.

Thanks for the update. I Googled around and it looks like she dislocated her elbow and is planning on getting surgery to repair torn ligaments. She'll rehab next month and get back to training starting in May. Wow! https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20240315/p2g/00m/0sp/046000c

3/25 is the deadline for wrestlers to declare that they will be competing at OTTs along with their weight class, but I believe they can redeclare their weight anytime before weigh-ins, even if they want to compete at a different weight than they qualified. Everyone who qualifies for trials will have a reasonable chance of making a run, and it will also depend on their challenge tournament draw. There are a lot of guys who could win NCAAs and aren't yet qualified. Starocci, Kerk, Keck, Ramos (would he go Greco?), Woods, Haines, Lovett, Mendez, Croo(k)ham, Figs, and Beard come to mind. I think we'll know more about the LCQ after NCAAs if non-champs want to give it a shot but I'm also curious to see who comes out of the woodwork for this like Ashnault, Deakin, Cenzo, IMar, MyMar, Lizak, Gadson, Lujan, and Kollln Moore. Idk if some of these guys are retired. Like Tomasello, any chance he gives it a go? Odds are slim though, I think only the champions of each weight advance to trials.

Wrestlers who may win it all with ....... mostly defense
CHROMEBIRD replied to swoopdown's topic in College Wrestling
Agree with all of this. Hamiti was getting to MM's legs and finishing, and he's the better scrambler due to his length. I think he got injured during the match. People saw him hobbling his way back to the locker room. You can also see him limping after the handshake in the Big Ten videos on Youtube. I'll be rooting for Hamiti over Carr because I think a match with KOT would be more interesting than seeing Carr-KOT again. MM is super fun though and I'd like to see him win it all next week. -
This is might blow your mind, but upward pressure on the underside of the neck can be enhanced with downward pressure using your own head, shoulder, chest, or hand as seen below

Wait, is that Davis or Dake? -
It's also easy to tell that you don't have a background in combat sports outside of wrestling. With hand on shoulder or traps you can easily choke someone across the windpipe with downward pressure on the opponent's head, or on the carotid artery with what you describe as "elbow away" movement. As seen in the pictures on the first page. This might all be moot at this point though. I haven't seen Nagao resort to it this season. He's been cutting guys more and scoring from his feet, as many PSU guys like to do.
