But you don’t actually think the qualify of completion is comparable do you? I know it’s not his fault (honestly him being there could be part of the reason why O’Toole and/or Hamiti bumped up), but Hendrickson’s competition blows his out of the water. Mesenbrink didn’t wrestle anyone that had been in a national final prior to this year, and Caliendo and Amine are the only prior AA’s he wrestled (with Minto being the only additional one this year), and he had a total of 3 decisions against them. Hendrickson had to beat 2 champions, a prior finalist, a prior AA (got 6 team points), plus 2 additional guys that earned AA this year (pinning one of them twice and teching the other).

Mesenbrink is a distant 3rd IMO. Zero pins and the worst competition

I don’t see how it doesn’t go to Hendrickson given the stated criteria, including sportsmanship. I think he deserves it based on the wrestling stats alone, the only reason Starocci would get it is past achievements. Which brings me back to sportsmanship. Maybe I’m old school but I don’t think someone that drew a picture of a sex toy on someone else should get an award where sportsmanship is a criteria.

Agree 100%. Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if UVU had no NIL to give. But they probably have scholarships, which Barraclaugh likely didn’t have at PSU. There also seems to be a steep dropoff in alleged payments. If you’re a top 3 or 4 guy, maybe you can get $500k (although I wouldn’t be surprised if that shrinks due to the lack of ROI on Teemer and Parco). But what does a R12 type guy get? There were guys like Isaiah Powe, who won a match at NCAA’s as a true freshman but apparently didn’t get a good enough offer to leave UTC (yes I know he is back in the portal). Even a Caleb Fish probably didn’t get all that much if anything to go to OSU.

No clue where Zeth Romney finishes his career, but since we’re talking about “good for the sport,” do you think Wyatt Hendrickson beats Gable Steveson if he wrestles for Air Force this year (assuming he was even allowed to which he wasn’t)? I don’t. I just don’t see how the current situation is really all that different than it was in the past. The mid-tier schools could never get the same recruits the top schools could. The difference now is they might lose guys they develop, but it’s also easier to get guys that couldn’t make it at the top schools, so seems like kind of a wash to me.

At worst, he should have one more year. 2021 - free year 2022 - year 1 2023 - redshirt 2024 - year 2 2025 - year 3 At best, he could have 3 more years if he can get a medical for 2022 and Olympic for 2024

Has Luke Smith done any interviews? I’m curious to hear his thoughts especially now with AJ in the portal. I wouldn’t expect him to say anything negative, but it’d be interesting to see how positive he is about his experience with AJ. Also curious if they had already talked about him potentially going back in the portal after the first year
