It’s a different level of commitment and competition in the practice room also at D2-D3-NAIA. I’m sure if you took those top guys and stuck them in a room with the same level of athletes you find at a D1 institute the D2-D3-NAIA top level guys would get a lot better. Iron sharpens iron.
We all expected for Levi to make the Penn State leap in year two. The facts of reality are that he is still a VERY good wrestler.. he is just pretty much the same guy that he was last year. Whether its the weight cut or injury that has stopped him from making the leap is unknown to me but we typically expect PSU guys to go from being very good to separating themselves from the pack. Last year he lost to Zerban in OT and then wrestled OT or 1 point matches with Lewan, Robb, Seibricht, Kendal Coleman & Barraclough.
If Dake only took losses in his true freshman season he would have a bigger argument. Since two of his losses came after his freshman year, Cael is the obvious pick.
Yeah I see a lot of the stalemate positions being called as positions where one wrestler is in a clear advantage position and the other wrestler is just holding on to force a stalemate and get a fresh start. I think we could do away with 90% of stalemate calls in matches.
I would say that Iowa is the 2nd best team right now. I do not see Ohio State in the mix for 2nd with the other teams that you listed unless something drastic changes. They just do not have the horses to rise up and challege for 2nd without Sasso, Kharchala being hurt and their young guys (outside of Mendez) stagnating. I do think that Michigan and OK State should be mentioned.
I have always appreciated McKee's grit and toughness. I also find his mat wrestling fun to watch. His bottom arsenal is mostly switches and rolls.. which you do not see a lot of today. His bottom game is akin to how heavyweights wrestle so it is cool to see a 125lber using similar techniques with great success. Shows how wrestling is such a diverse sport and individuals can have success with a variety of techniques.
125 - Ayala #5 vs McKee #18

Cam Amine beat Alex Marinelli, who beat Vincenzo Joseph, who beat Isaiah Martinez, who beat Jason Nolf, who beat Georgios Kougioumtsidis, who beat Kadimagomedov, who beat Kyle Dake, who beat Jordan Burroughs... Therefore Cam Amine USA GOAT.
Give Carlson some time. He was our first semester with an injury and is not back in shape yet. He wins a lot of matches by grinding down his opponents. He will be in the mix come conference tourney time.
