First, it's obvious Iowa/Hawkeye RTC had the best performance overall. The Lee and Kennedy Blades both won silver, which were the best performance the US team had in Paris. Second, it's obvious NLWC underperformed. RBY went 0-1, Zain went 0-1, Snyder got 5th (when he was favored to medal), Brooks got 3rd (really should have been in the finals) and Dake got 3rd (when he was favored to win). Third, overall it seems women are outperforming men at freestyle. This is no surprise given women ONLY wrestle freestyle at the college level. So is the takeaway that Iowa/Hawkeye receives a boost and Penn State/NLWC loses a bit of luster amongst recruits who have Olympic aspirations? Bonus: how impressive is Japan? They dominated in both styles in both men and women's. Imagine a college team of Japanese wrestlers...how would they do at NCAAs after a few years of practicing folkstyle?

In both men and women's wrestling...in both Greco and Freestyle, Japan is amazingly good. Why is this? Asian countries tend not to be known for proficiency at strength-based sports, but rather precision/technique based sports like diving, table tennis and badminton. Yet Japan seems to stand out as an Asian country that is tops overall when it comes to wrestling. What explains this? I can't imagine sumo is the reason why.
