The answer to "what's happening" is obvious. When you reduce negative social pressure against something, incidence increases. If you're not following, there wasn't a drastic increase of people who were left handed in the early 1900s. Society became more accepting of left-handedness and stopped forcing left-handed children to use their right hands, revealing the true number of left-handed individuals was actually much higher than believed. It got easier to be a trans person in America, so more trans people came out of the closet. What you want is for them to stay in the closet. It's not going to change who they really are though.
