The Anti-War President strikes again!
uncle bernard replied to VakAttack's topic in Non Wrestling Topics
A foreign country just assassinated one of their top officials on their own soil (and killed dozens of civilians, including children, the process). Anyway, Netanyahu called the Palestinians "Amalek," who God commands the Israelites to genocide in the bible. So you can save it with "classy." -

Is Iran on that list? -
The Anti-War President strikes again!

I think that's possibly true, but what reason does Iran have to believe that? Netanyahu said we were involved. We said we weren't, but are very clear we're backing Israel even after they supposedly disobeyed our wishes, so what is Iran supposed to believe? -

This was in response to another Israeli assassination of an IRGC general. So, Israel still struck first. -

"defend ourselves" My guy, we struck first. They're the ones defending themselves! It's not totally clear yet how much approval Israel had on this strike. Based on the Rubio statement and Trump asking them to wait until after the negotiations with Iran, my guess is Netanyahu went ahead on his own. The plan there is crystal clear: force our hand into joining the war he's wanted for decades. What's also clear is that Israel is no longer "defending itself." They are now bombing half the region. They have expansionist aspirations, and say that out loud. We'll see if Trump has more strength than Biden on this. Biden let Netanyahu completely hijack his presidency. Will Trump do the same? -
Stay safe. My prayers are with you.

Article about the rise of a Dual State
uncle bernard replied to Doublehalf's topic in Non Wrestling Topics
That's not a class topic. That's something that would be discussed in an Ethics of War class or something like that, and yes it's appropriate to discuss. All sorts of taboo topics are discussed in Ethics classes (that's kind of the whole point of the class). I was in a class where an ROTC student made a pro-drone warfare presentation where the core of his argument is that non-American lives do not have the same value as American lives, and therefore we shouldn't worry about killing civilians in war. In debate classes, one of the most common techniques is to make someone defend the opposing view. For example, an anti-abortion person has to argue why abortion should be legal. That doesn't mean they have to actually believe it. But it makes them thoroughly examine both sides of the argument, which in turn makes them more equipped to argue for their actual beliefs because they fully understand the other side's position and how to argue against it. -

If you DM me, I will look at the requirements and admit I was wrong publicly on here. -

Sure, but that's not what's happening. You're extrapolating 1 anecdote that we don't even know is true and claiming it's representative of normal college experiences. And you've also confirmed here that what I said earlier is true. You're not mad about "indoctrination." You're mad that students aren't being indoctrinated with your ideas. You don't understand what education is. You don't understand academic freedom. You want the world to cater to your beliefs because you are entitled. -

Right. When you go to College, you are trusting the experts who run that College to decide what the proper curriculum is. Your consumer choice is where/whether you attend, not what you have to take when you get there. This is a great example of entitlement culture. You don't get to demand the world cater to your every desire. You keep acting like being required to take a class *about* something means you have to believe or endorse everything that's said in that class. That's just stupid. You think it's indoctrination because you've been indoctrinated to believe that everything that even talks about gender, race, etc...is inherently evil. What you're actually mad about is that the colleges *aren't indoctrinating* students with *your beliefs.* -

None of those are even remotely "hypothetical" DEI topics lol I might as well propose some "hypothetical" Conservative topics while we're at it: Should we liquidate the poor? Are you a bad person if you're not wealthy? Are immigrants human? -

Where the F are you getting these? I think you've lost your mind if you think any of those topics compare to "DEI" ideas. You can't even define DEI. It's an umbrella term you use for any sort of social value you don't like. -

Your framing of what college is supposed to be is wrong. It's an overall education - in the classroom and in life. That means learning about the world, even the parts you don't like. If those ideas are so wrong, being exposed to them will only make that more clear to your daughter. One reason our society has a crisis in critical thinking is because we've been slowly moving towards the education system that you want - one that is more focused on specialized areas of knowledge rather than a broad foundation. That's how we get to a place where you label every class with a certain word in the title "DEI," and therefore it has no value. It's close-minded. It's the opposite of what education is supposed to be about. College students shouldn't have "safe spaces" from ideas they don't like. They need to learn to engage with them because that's how the world works. -

Then why did she choose to go there? I also think your obsession with DEI is a bit strange. I'm sorry your daughter might have to listen to ideas you don't agree with, but this is college, not preschool. -

As I was saying @mspart, @jross was exaggerating when he said the class was required. It is simply one option among many to satisfy a particular requirement, and that will only be one class among the dozens she will take to graduate. This is just bogus culture-war hysteria, likely stemming from his anxiety that his daughter's values won't end up being a carbon-copy of his own. -

Because it makes you a more well-rounded student who can engage and analyze information across a variety of topics, and therefore, are better prepared to be successful in life. This might surprise you, but this is how education has always been structured. 100 years ago, students were required to read Virgil in the original Latin or Homer in the Greek despite never having any need to do so "in the real world." Why? Because it made them smarter. -

Nope, because surprisingly the world doesn't entirely revolve around you. They'll be there whether you pay attention or not. -

Without knowing the actual school, I can't get too specific, but here are Iowa's Gen Ed Requirements: https://catalog.registrar.uiowa.edu/liberal-arts-sciences/general-education-program/ As you can see, there are 100s of classes that meet the requirements, allowing students to choose what they're most interested in. This is how it's set up at most colleges. For some examples: Students can satisfy the "Values and Society" requirement with anything from "Food in America" to "Gender and Society" to "Ancient Sports and Leisure." In "Understanding Cultural Perspectives" students have options from "The Soundtrack of Black America" to "Anne Frank and her Story" to "The Italian American Experience." If your daughter is taking the class, it's probably because she wants to, whether it's because she's interested in the topic or it fits her schedule the best. -

They aren't, but that class probably isn't either. It's probably an option, among a bunch of classes, that could count for a specific required gen ed. -

You're example #1. Almost all of your posts, including this one, are poorly written, with ideas that don't cohere logically. -

You can't even put coherent thoughts together. This doesn't address anything I said. Your operate on random word association based on your emotions. That's all you do.
