Who will be the Chair of the Federal Reserve on January 21, 2025? This is one of the most intriguing questions, to me, at the start of Donald Trump's second term. Even though Jerome Powell is a Republican who Trump previously nominated to be chair, he is also someone Trump has said he wants to fire. The ability of a president to fire the chair of The Fed is disputed. And more recently Trump has backed away from saying he will fire Powell. But let's not forget the saga with the CFPB. Trump appoint Mick Mulvaney to take over as interim head (and shut it down), but Obama nominee, Leandra English refused to leave. Ultimately Mulvaney prevailed by being nice and bringing in doughnuts (and they weren't even good donuts, just crappy Dunkin'). Everyone began listening to him, so he was in charge. English sued and it dragged out for 18 months before English gave up. But it was very entertaining while it lasted. The CFPB structure is very different than the Fed structure than the Fed structure, though. The Fed is designed to be independent, the CFPB is not.

Iowa seemed like the natural choice unless Bob Nicolls turned off the money tap. -
Gable Steveson returns to college wrestling
Wrestleknownothing replied to VakAttack's topic in College Wrestling
Interesting point. I always say no one gets better at wrestling by not wrestling. But in Steveson's case I am not sure it really matters. A rusty Steveson with no one to push him probably still dominates the field. I just think he is one of one. -

Time to turn an eye to the Buckeyes. Says Who? Wrestlestat says. The algorithm seems to prefer the Buckeyes to the indivdual. Wrestlestat has OSU ranked higher in six of ten weights with Kharchla's 174 ranking being the most significant difference of opinion. I have been trained to trust the machine's. I was a fan of that plucky young go getter Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 in the 1984 underdog classic, The Terminator. So let's go with Wrestlestat the rest of the way. All-Americans If Wrestlestat knows what they are talking about, the Buckeyes look to have somewhere between 3 and 4 All-Americans this year. The obvious one is Jesse Mendez. As the top dog at 141 he has a slightly better than 98% chance of All-Americaning. I know, I know. Dude has a title. Come on, of course he will AA. Not so fast my friend. Returning finalist from 2014-2024 only AA 89% of the time. Nick Feldman as a four seed has about three chances in four to become an AA. Putting it all together gets us 3.5 expected AA's from 10 weights. Ohio State is Clearly Better Than PSU I pointed this out on the Illinois thread, too. PSU currently has only 9 wrestlers in the top 33. Ohio State has 10. As I type, Ohio State has a better shot at matching Minnesota's all-time feat of 10 AA's than PSU. So, there is that.

UWW changing transfer rules?
Wrestleknownothing replied to 1032004's topic in International Wrestling
I thought that was a little odd, too. From their summary: "Acknowledging that this excessive use of the rules has negatively impacted the participation in, and the development of our sport for nationals in many countries" So I was trying to think which countries would have this problem? I suppose some of the eastern European countries that have taken in Russian nationals (Uzbekistan, Albania, Azerbeijan, and Bulgaria all had Russian medalists in Paris). But countries like San Marino, Italy, Bahrain would not have this problem. The other question is who would complain? Probably not the beneficiaries of the Russians. More likely it is the countries who did not win medals, but thought they could have with fewer Russians in the competition. -
If what happened last year is any indication, the answer has to be yes. Based on seeds Cornell was in the 4-8 range, with <1 point separating fourth from eighth, and NC State was a clear favorite to finish second. Cornell had a great tournament and finished second while NC State severely underperformed and dropped all the way down to twelfth. Ohio State also had a strong performance at last year's tournament, beating their seeds at five weights and matching at three weights. Rinse and repeat.

UWW changing transfer rules?
Wrestleknownothing replied to 1032004's topic in International Wrestling
The old rule allowed for transferring and competing for another country if you had a residency permit (does not mean you actually lived there) or a valid passport. The new rule only allows that if you have a valid passport. If Amine has only a San Marino passport he fine. If he is competing for San Marino under the now removed residency permit exception there is a two year transition period to comply with the passport provision. If he has dual nationality he will need to produce a proof of residency in San Marino. -
Yesterday it was a list of the newly ranked freshmen on Wrestlestat. Today it is the non-freshman edition. Below is the list of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who started the year outside of the top 33, but now are in the top 33. Wrestlestat originally had Rocco Welsh at 174 for Ohio State, but now has Carson Kharchla Wrestlestat originally had Vinny Kilkeary at 125 for Ohio State, but after Brendan McCrone won the de facto wrestleoff at the Clarion Open he becomes the guy. Wrestlestat originally had Ira Jenkins at 285 for Michigan, but now has Josh Heindselman.

Is Aaron Brooks too short for 197?
Wrestleknownothing replied to Jimmy Cinnabon's topic in College Wrestling
This just in. Over the weekend Aaron Brooks was forced to appear at halftime of the PSU football game to turn over his 197 pound title to a guy they found in the stands who weighed 197 AND was taller than Brooks. When asked about the seemingly arbitrary way to determine a national champ, Brooks said, "Some SOB on Intermat realized I was too short for 197, so they are making me do this. He better pray to Allah I do not find out who he is." Sixty seven year old Baron Rooks, seen clapping to Brooks' right, was not surprised. "I knew I could take Brooks on the measuring tape and equal him on the scale. This is the right thing. It is just a shame it took so long," Rooks said. Rooks, a manager at a mall-based fast food chain in Omaha, Nebraska is planning to display his well deserved trophy next to the cash register. -
Another thing that makes you go hmmm is taking Minnow's word for it. But Sanderson is always forthright with the media...sorry had to wipe some tears while typing.

One more. Because they wrestle the NWCA on Saturday, expect to see some back ups at some of 141, 149, 157, 174 and 184 against Drexel on Sunday.

Possible changes to NCAA Eligibility
Wrestleknownothing replied to billyhoyle's topic in College Wrestling
I just want to be clear. Now it is value, right? Not just revenue generation? Before you said value and revenue generation are the same thing. But here you are saying they are different in different cases (you know, not the same thing). Before you were saying it was only about ability to make revenue for the school. But now you say all professional jobs have subjective criteria. Maybe take a minute. Give it a little more thought. And then decide which you want it to be. -

No, they are not. For the reasons I listed above. -

There you go again, switching definitions. Now it is about value? Before you said it was about generating revenue. -
Possible changes to NCAA Eligibility
Wrestleknownothing replied to billyhoyle's topic in College Wrestling
No. Nowhere in the working world is everyone's pay based solely on their revenue generating capacity. There are profit centers and there are cost centers in ever business. If you are a sales person, then sure there is a revenue component. If you are the Chief Financial Officer, the Chief Compliance Officer, the General Counsel you generate zero revenue, but you are likely among the highest paid individuals at a company. -
https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/news/5-penn-state-wrestling-takeaways-from-media-day-updates-on-greg-kerkvliet-aaron-nagao-starter-battles-more/ From the article: 1. Aaron Nagao is hurt, Greg Kervliet is not 2. No decision yet at 157 between Kasak (up form 149) and Facundo (down from 165) 3. Coaches wanted Starocci to go 184 last year 4. There is still a chance Lilledahl redshirts(assuming if Kurt McHenry impresses) 5. 197 is also undecided between Lucas Cochran and Josh Barr 6. While there has been a round of wrestle offs, they will also use the non-conference schedule to make some decisions 7. Both Mirasolas are redshirting

Possible changes to NCAA Eligibility
Wrestleknownothing replied to billyhoyle's topic in College Wrestling
NIL has never been designed to be equal. No serious person is talking about equal NIL. Nor would it even be possible to make payments equal because there is not a single payor who could control it. Stop conflating NIL payments with the potential payments made directly by schools to athletes as part of the House settlement. -
The Minnow is claiming Facundo beat Kasak. Not sure if that was a wrestle off, or if PSU even does wrestle offs.

Very Muskian of you

I would be surprised if they did not do this.
