I remember some time ago a #1 lost in the first round.   That would be a shocker this year.

Greg Jones (returning champ) is likely the biggest one, and Scott Justus was a victim of a first rd #1 seed upset..

There's a good chance that the 1st one seed to lose is one of the Penn State wrestlers - as SEVEN of them are 1 seeds...

JC who is your choice?

I would say Van Ness losing to Swiderski is most likely first 1 seed to fall.  Of course I hope Shayne wins it all though.

125 Lilledahl  -tough matches early

157 Duke -tough bracket early

These two , have it tough early?

I guess you could say they have it tough pretty early.

I'm going with Lilledahl.

I'm rooting for him, but this bracket looks like it was drawn with "Let's make sure Luke doesn't make the finals" in mind.

First he has Witt in R16, who he had to come back to beat 6-5 in the dual.  (Assume Witt beats Jett S, who is scary in his own right.)  That could easily be an early upset.

Next he has Peterson, who beat Luke last year.  Luke has 2 decisions over him this year, but Dean still accounts for one of Dean's three official losses.

Then he has the semi from hell.  He gets the winner of undefeated Seymour, who knocked Luke into the loser's bracket last year, and the winner of last year's two 125lb finalists, Robinson and Spratley, who incomprehensibly meet in the R16.  Whoever comes out of that bracket quarter is going to be wrestling at the top of his game, and objectively, I'd probably favor whoever that is over Luke.

Luke's great, but let's not forget how vulnerable he's looked at this this year, and his loss to his true freshman teammate at the Scuffle.

If M&K tagged teamed him maybe but probably not.

Haha… I wouldn’t go that far, but I was probably being generous with a 30% chance

Greg Jones, 2003 sophomore went in as the undefeated defending champ and lost round 1. He didn't lose again after that tournament.

If he came around a generation later, he would be rightfully recognized as a human highlight reel on social media and properly remembered as one of, if not the, best 3x champs ever. His blast double walked so Jordan Burroughs could run.

Going to WVU hurt (unrightfully) his legacy more than anything else.

Last time a #1 seed lost before the quarter finals?  2022: David Carr fell in the 2nd round to Hunter Willits of Oregon State.

Possibly losing in rd 16:

Van Ness to Frost (not likely but possible)

Possible losses in quarters:

LL to Peterson

Van Ness to Swiderski

Duke to Cannon/Cardenas

Bastida to Mirasola/ Kueter (most likely IMO but still less than 30% chance)

None of these are super likely but I see them all as possibilities. There are several toss ups in Semis. If I had to pick one I’m most confident in, it’s Seidel over Forrest

I think that you mean LL to Renteria!

His older brother was also a 2x runner-up for WVU.

I am going to say Lilledahl. He has a tough path and I don’t think he makes the finals. His path could be Witt who almost beat him earlier in the year/Strickenberger who will be a few hours away from weigh in, then Dean Peterson who beat him last year, then Seymour who beat him last year.

Duke is my sleeper to go down though. Cardenas could do it. Cannon sounds like he is in a much better place than big tens so he could be the guy to do it as well.

Lilledahl loses to Spratley in the semis
Forrest doesn't lose
Mendez loses to Vega in the finals
Van Ness doesn't lose
Duke doesn't lose
Mesenbrink doesn't lose
Haines loses to Minto in the finals
Welsh loses to Sinclair in the finals
Barr loses to Sasso in the semis
Bastida loses in the semis to Feldman

He had them relevant when he was there I’m pretty sure they made national duals a year or 2 but unfortunately the school couldn’t care less about wrestling.  Too the extent they tell donors and alumni not to donate to wrestling and insist on the money going to football or BBall
