In each of those cases, how long should he have needed before returning to competition?  Be specific, since you say you clearly know that the time he took was not long enough.  A month more?  A year more?  On what do you base this conclusion?  Was it that he only took third his freshman year, and only took fifth his sophomore year?  Should the Cornell staff (coaches, medical personnel, etc.) have consulted you before allowing him to return?  If not you, then whom?  You seem to feel that there is some amount of recovery time that would have been adequate for Shapiro's health.

When he came back to the Ivy tournament and TFed Swisher 19-2 who he had only beaten 6-2 exactly a month earlier, was that evidence that he should not have been competing?

Was it that he beat Zerban (twice, once by 9-0) and Lovett at the NCAAs two weeks later, despite being very under weight?

It's possible to know that Shapiro's medical issues his soph year were serious (do you dispute that?) *and* to know that he was able to recover from those issues in time to compete in the post-season (do you dispute that as well?).

Based on a concussion.

I thought it was a coma

And a punctured lung.

Dude was on deaths door.

Specific time line? Longer than what was taken if youre going to use it as an excuse for his under peformance.

You are making no sense.  Freshman year he had what might have been a concussion early in the year, then landed on his head against Cardenas in the 1/4s at NCAAs.  Sophomore year he had a seizure episode in February that put him in a coma, gave him a punctured lung, and caused a ~fifteen pound weight loss a month before Ivy tournament.  He wrestled underweight at Ivy and NCAAs.

Freshman year he came back the next day and won all his matches, including the rematch with Cardenas in the third place match.  Sophomore year he TFed Swisher in the Ivy finals, after only beating him by decision a month earlier (before the medical episode) and while underweight.  Took fifth at NCAAs.  Those are the facts, not excuses.

Again:  how long should he have been held out of competition, and on what do you base that?

You keep saying coma like he slipped away and they couldn’t wake him up when in reality they sedated him so give his lung some time to heal.Massive difference between the 2.

The seizure didn’t put him into a coma. The whole ordeal he went through was messed up enough without you dramatizing it.

He says he went into the hospital on 2/11, and woke up on 2/14.  If you say they sedated him and put him in a coma, I have only his words to go on.  I apologize for saying "put him", when the more accurate way to say it was "resulted in him."  Better?

You need to lay off the Cornell fans.  Let them hold on to what little hope they have.  Dake left, Yianni and Vito are struggling, their best recruit in quite a while in Knox left,  Correa wasn't Wade Schalles reincarnate when he met someone with a pulse...and the most important thing is that it turns out that Mike Grey wasn't the secret sauce behind Koll.

I know what it's like when a program fades so give them some space.

Nice.  You really get the Cornell wrestling fan mindset.  I hadn't even heard those straw man arguments, so thanks for getting me back up to speed.  I'll pass the word.

(if by "best recruit in quite a while" you mean "two years," I guess I can't argue)

Well which one is? Was he healthy or was he not?

You don't get to say blame his under performance by saying he wasn't healthy but say he was healthy. Youre the one who's not making sense.

The Ivy league tournament shouldn't even be considered a qualifying tournament for the NCAA finals.  The tournaments we joke about like the Soldier Salute or the Cyclone Open have stronger fields.  Cornell is committed to wrestling, Penn half assed committed and the others couldn't care less.

Shapiro wrestling no one all year always give him a gaudy record and he always disappoints at Nationals.

Words can hurt.  The programs care plenty.   Ivies have no scholarship $$ and limits on who can get admitted based on academic index standards.  Have to compete for recruits with scholarship programs with good academics.   Limited pool or recruits and league limits on special admits for athletics.

Are you really going to argue that Harvard cares about wrestling?  Brown hasn't had an all-american this century so they care a ton.

Cornell pays a coach and has a quality RTC despite having a fraction of the resources and name recognition that some of the other Ivies have.   Harvard or Princeton could be national champs within a decade if they truly committed to winning.

Princeton put some effort in during the Ayers years idk if that’s continuing under Dubuque the NJRTC they put together had some success as well

Harvard cares about Hockey & love.

I know this from watching LOVE STORY.

I will know they care about Wrestling when I see a movie about Jesse Jantzen and J.P. O'Connor.

Brown had an AA in 2014 ,Bernstein took 7th , Ed Ruth won the weight

This is the craziest statement I've ever read on these boards. Care to elaborate? Does caring involve removing all academic barriers to be accepted into one of these schools? Do they break off from the other Ivies and start using NIL to lure in recruits?

What exactly does Harvard truly committing to wrestling look like to you? I'm genuinely curious to know how they're dropping the ball on having a national championship wrestling team.

Im guessing according to BrcuceyB Iowa doesn't care enough hence why they stopped winning National titles.

In the end, money matters.  Harvard and Princeton could tap resources that other schools simply can't.  If Harvard offered the best coaching in the world, a high paying spot at graduation with the RTC and the prestige of a Harvard degree, they'd have their choice of recruits even more than Penn State does now.

The academic barriers aren't nearly as high as you believe.  Would there be a few recruits that couldn't pass the muster? Sure but for the most part the discipline required in wrestling  also corresponds with the classroom.

You also seem to misunderstand NIL and the Ivies.  While the Ivies don't participate, they also don't prevent students from outside revenue.

I disagree with all of this. You could go ahead and put Cael at Harvard next year and he's not landing the same recruits as he is at PSU due to academic barriers and inability to give substantial sums to these wrestlers.

If the academic barriers would only exclude "a few recruits" as you say, then why aren't guys that are at mid-majors going to an Ivy to get that prestigious degree? Probably because they weren't recruited because they didn't have the academics..

You seems to misunderstand the sum of NIL that is being offered to recruits. A student legitimately using their Name, Image, and Likeness from outside revenue isn't making peanuts in comparison to what wrestlers are being paid at the big programs.

If he can avoid more head injuries he should be in the finals.

very well said.....lets hope the head injuries stay clear of all athletes in all sports!

with this being said and no issues with concussions, he is my pick to win it all @ 157!!!

You are so uninformed, I don't know where to start.  You act as those the Ivies are some ivory tower bullshit. Both Harvard and Yale were exposed in the "Varsity Blues" scandal so athletics can play a role in getting students admitted.

And the big money that athletes are being paid at other schools isn't coming from the university, but rather from uber-wealthy donors.  Very few colleges have as many uber-wealthy alumni as most of the Ivies.  The "no show" jobs that schools used to cheat with aren't against the rules now so a week internship at a hedge fund can be six figures.

So, what exactly is it that is holding Harvard back from winning National Titles? Don't you think a few bigtime recruits would be interested in going to Harvard to get the prestigious degree if it's as simple as you're saying? Who was the last notable recruit that went to Harvard? Jantzen? One of the Peppelman brothers? It's interesting that all of these kids are deciding to go to Michigan State, Indiana, Cal Poly, etc. when only a "few" likely don't have the "muster" to get into Harvard.

I know it's a novel concept but kids wrestle at Indiana because those kids are recruited by Indiana.    What's Harvard's excuse?

Why should they care?

Well, I would have previously thought that Harvard was much more limited in the athlete's they could recruit based on the academic requirements to not only get admitted to Harvard, but then to perform well enough academically to balance a Harvard class load as well as the rigors of D1 athletics. Not to mention my ignorance about the fact that NIL at Ivies is actually as alive and well as any other program, maybe even better considering their uber rich alumni connections.

But now that you've enlightened me that the requirements to get admitted to Harvard would actually only be an obstacle for a few wrestlers, and how easy it is to bypass the NIL restrictions at the Ivies, it actually seems like the head coaches at these schools must be the worst recruiters in D1.

I can't believe that Harvard isn't the #1 coaching destination in wrestling now that I am better informed.

These things can change, but I think the league rules have been and remain a larger barrier for Ivy wrestling programs to compete in the top ten of NCAA division one.  The league intends to have amatuerism in athletics and will steer away from too much emphasis on athletic success in several ways. It is a small miracle what Cornell has built. AMong other things like date restrictions, on recruiting there is an academic index that limits admissions slots, The number of athletic recruits on levels lower on that index that can be recruited are regulated and limited.  Some schools may spend those lower slots on a one set of sports and some may spend them on another.  Some programs get more slots for wrestling and it changes over the years.

While it is true that Harvard and Yale (who dropped wrestling sadly) have very large endowments, that does not mean that those funds are going to be applied to wrestling programs or wrestling program, coaching, or infastructure.  One poster denigrated the relative funds of Cornell, but the Big Red has had many large donors who earmarked gifts for wrestling. Some gy named Friedman?  Same at Penn and I think Princeton (not as sure about those Tiger details).   I do not know details, but I doubt that Harvard has had the kind of donor support directed to wrestling that Cornell and Penn have had.  Also, somewhat of a geographic defecit - New England wrestling is a little thin at the schoolboy level.  It can make a difference.

Beats Intermat #2 Larkin with a TD and backs in 3rd.  Kid does some Houdini stuff out there.  It usually works but it is damn stressful sometimes …. What is he doing!!!

Flo had Larkin (3) and PJ (2) flipped vs Intermat.  Both lost this weekend.  Meyer is only undefeated outside of Cannon.  Clear #2?

What is Cannon’s best win?

He beat Antrell Taylor 16-4

Cannon vs PJ will be very telling as to how this weight shapes out in March. Feels like seeding and draws will be crucial similarly to 133.
