Shapiro wrestled at Spartan his senior year in HS, so really a true freshman.

Gotta love calling concussions “injuries.”  Clueless.

How is it not? I'm from the generation of walk it off and work through it, but there's absolutely no doubt when it comes to concussions we got it wrong.

Shapiro quickly approaching Spencer Lee territory where it’s literally never his fault when he loses it’s “injuries” meanwhile 60 percent of the ncaa field every year is dealing with some type of ailment.

Come on man.. only my guy is injured... everyone else is in tip top shape. Don't you know the drill by now?

A concussion is literally an injury to the brain...

"Meyer Shapiro was hospitalized on February 14th (just over a month ago) - was in a coma for a couple days, had seizures, a punctured lung, and remained hospitalized for a week."

But sure, everyone is dealing with something. smh..

Yes. Sounds like he shouldn't have been out there at all. Theres more to life than NCAA Wrestling... you know like... staying alive...

Nick Suriano was in the hospital with life and knee threatening staph 10 days before big tens but I never hear that brought when people talk about him losing in to Spencer in the finals a few weeks later.

Probably because nobody was disparaging his performance..

I don't disagree, but nice spin-zone from he underperformed to he shouldn't have even been competing. Clearly the kid can't win with you. Carry on.

I have 1/31 circled on the calendar. If we see Larkin vs Shapiro we can find out just where each of these guys stands at 157

Larkin's brother missed Serrano today, so maybe he will "miss" Shapiro.

maybe, but Kaleb hit Watters and Zerban already this year. Zeke has always run his top guys on pitch counts, its just the way he approaches the season.

Uhh.. the first post i made in this thread was poking fun at fans who are always biased toward their team as a joke. It wasnt for or against any wrestler or team

Please tell me where I disparaged or show anything remotely negatuve against Meyer. Your tone is misdirected sir.

These two scenarios are not the same and it's very disengenuous of you to try to make them out to be the same. I've had staph more than once and it's not close to what Shapiro was dealing with.

Staph kills 20,000 people a year in America. People lose limbs from it. Glad you made it through ok. Suriano was in the hospital with a 103 fever a little over a week before big tens and made the ncaa finals with a hole in his knee. Idk how you are arguing that’s somehow less serious than what Shapiro went through .

Shapiro was in a coma.  A coma.  Let me repeat for those in the back of the room:  a coma.  He lost almost fifteen pounds.  He could have wrestled 149 at Ivies.

As someone that works in healthcare I can tell you staph can be serious but the ability to recover and perform after having it treated is very different from being in the hospital for over a week and in an induced coma with no stimulation to the musculature or proper nutrition causing rapid weight loss. Then having a punctured lung and seizures on top of it all right before a conference tournament is just not the same as having a 103 fever.

And yet his coach, athletic trainer, and university still allowed him to compete... hmmm..... makes you wonder how much importance the athletic department view their students' health and wellbeing...

Obviously you would know better than his doctor about whether or not his return to competition was a danger to his health.

It is a terrible take when you consider he took 3rd his true freshman year and then almost died in the hospital and by some miracle found his way back to wrestle in the tournament and took 5th. Judging everyone by whether or not they win 4 titles is absurd and I don't think everyone was talking about him coming out of highschool being a 4 timer. A contender yes but you act like he had the hype of mark hall which he certainly didn't.

Talk about a terrible take...

Oh youre one of those. You cant have it both ways buddy.

And yes. For the record I do know better. It didn't take a medical degree to see Meyer Shaprio was clearly very concussed his freshman year and should NOT have been competing yet his coaches continued to allow him to.

It doesn't take a medical degree to know if the dude was in a coma and had a punctured lung, he should have been competiting his sophomore year. But but but a doctor signed off on it so its OK.

You dont get to moan and groan about the severity of his injuries.... then minimize the severity of them because someone signed off on it.

Im pretty sure it wouldn't have taken much for Jake Deitchler (do you even know who he is?)to find a doctor willing to sign off on his return to wrestling so i hold VERY LITTLE VALUE in whwt you just wrote.

In each of those cases, how long should he have needed before returning to competition?  Be specific, since you say you clearly know that the time he took was not long enough.  A month more?  A year more?  On what do you base this conclusion?  Was it that he only took third his freshman year, and only took fifth his sophomore year?  Should the Cornell staff (coaches, medical personnel, etc.) have consulted you before allowing him to return?  If not you, then whom?  You seem to feel that there is some amount of recovery time that would have been adequate for Shapiro's health.

When he came back to the Ivy tournament and TFed Swisher 19-2 who he had only beaten 6-2 exactly a month earlier, was that evidence that he should not have been competing?

Was it that he beat Zerban (twice, once by 9-0) and Lovett at the NCAAs two weeks later, despite being very under weight?

It's possible to know that Shapiro's medical issues his soph year were serious (do you dispute that?) *and* to know that he was able to recover from those issues in time to compete in the post-season (do you dispute that as well?).

We're comparing this to something that happened 20 years ago? 20 years ago we weren't sure if an athlete would ever pitch again if they had Tommy John, and an ACL was still often a death sentence to a career. 20 years in the medical field is a longggg time my brother.
