Iowa athletes' lawsuit re: sports gambling surveillance fails

The lawsuit was dismissed in federal court.

This lawsuit affected many athletes, including several wrestlers, most notably Nelson Brands, the son of Iowa coach Terry Brands.

• Nelson Brands should appeal to the Supreme Court and get another season of eligibility

I didn’t really like the judge’s explanation.  DOJ trampled all over your rights but since there is no specific law on using that technology yet too bad.  At least that’s what I got out of it.

That how "qualified immunity" works.    Look it up.    I don't like the concept but the Judge is bound by precedent.

if i wanted to really really go on a rant that doesn't fit on a wrestling forum i'd explain why qualified immunity is the worst thing the supreme court ever invented. it's why cops get to shoot first and ask questions later. iowa athletes getting jammed up for gambling is not close to the worst thing that happens because of QI. (not invented by the current court and there's a *little* momentum towards reining it in from some lower courts, but not a lot.)

John Oliver did a segment on police chases and their use of QI as a defense against litigation and other recourse. Slightly ironic for Nelson to rail against it in this one instance where it didn't suit his needs.
