I drove from Split to Zagreb (with a stopover at Plitvice Lake National Park) with my wife in 2008.  We decided to take local roads to see the countryside.  I was amazed to see so many minefield warning signs and buildings still showing damage (bullet holes, etc) from the war in the 1990s.
