Ian Miller was like a kid who only hit the cool looking homerun moves, but then when he made it all the way to the top level of college wrestling with that stuff, coaches have to re-think what they call "junk moves".

Dylan Ness is probably the only wrestler to get to the level he did without learning how to sprawl.

I'm going to throw out a name to discuss: Tony Davis.  He, Drew Foster, and Parker Keckeisen are the most recent modern era NCAA champs from UNI, but something that made Tony's story different is that he didn't wrestle his senior year of HS and was caught up in Chicago gang lifestyle, which was WAAAY worse in the 90's.  JUCO and Mark Manning helped him turn it around and win a natty.  He was considered one of the best kid's wrestlers in IL history and I don't think he lost at all through youth, middle school, and his first 3 years of high school.  He lost in the IL state final to Reggie Wright as a junior (one of the best HS matches ever), and his life completely spun out of control after the loss.

Otto Olson-seemed like he was around foooorever. Always make jokes about him seeming to be the first 6th, 7th, 8th year wrestler.

Taught me how to really ride legs one summer. Literally changed the trajectory of my life for the better.

Twan Pham - Illinois.

Born in Vietnam and raised Siamese fighting fish (I'll never forget that fun fact). Moved to Hong Kong then the Philippines then the Chicago burbs. Became a very good gymnast and decent wrestler in HS.

Started at Northern IL. Transferred to Illinois and sat behind 2x finalist Kyle Ott. Finally cracked varsity and became a 2x NQ.

Pham went from barely speaking English in 1992 to majoring in ceramic engineering at UofI in 2000. That is some brains.

Jacob Newby

HOLY $hit. Dude. Those that don't know, need to go look him up. Newby was one of the most dominant highschool wrestlers I've ever laid eyes on. The other for me was TJ Jaworski and I would honestly say Newby was better in highschool, and I know that is a mouth full. EVERYONE wanted him, he goes to OSU, fought with Smith about what weight to go, and then left and went to OU and fizzled out. Like to play in his band and party. I ran into him prolly 3-4 years ago, and I was kinda a fanboy to be honest. My gawd he was good...Thank you for bringing that one up. If anyone can find film on him, please look it up. He was slick man

Speaking of TJ Jaworski, you guys know how and why he left Okie State? Not a good look for John.

Jamie Clark.

Watched him wrestle a bunch at St. Edward. He was 1 of 2 people to ever beat David Taylor in high school. Didnt have the mindset/heart to continue with wrestling once he got to Illinois.

This is a good one.

I do believe Mason wrestled a couple years but definitely underachieved. Was part of the awesome Blair high school team with Medina, Shannaman (sp?), Platt, etc.

1993 was the year Oklahoma State was banned from the NCAA tournament. Presumably he transferred to avoid having to sit out that tournament.

SO, John was still training and still pretty much in his prime of wrestling. TJ, obviously tough as hell. RUMOR has it, TJ got the better of him in a few goes and John injured TJ, his ankle. This is a rumor that I have heard from a few people that were in the program. TJ said he was leaving, and John said he would never allow him to transfer out. This part is fact: The team was gone out of town on a dual, and TJ went into the AD's office and said, I am here to sign my transfer papers. AD says, I have no idea what you are talking about. TJ acts pissed, and says, John said they would be ready for me to sign. AD says, I cannot do that without John approving. TJ says, I will call him right now, acts like he is on the phone, does the "yep, i am in here and he says he didn't know about it etc" Obviously didn't talk to JOhn, but hangs up the phone. TJ says there you go, he said go ahead and draft them up and let me sign. AD does it. TJ signs transfer out. TJ is gone, heading to North Carolina and John gets back and is pissed...All sounds nuts, but it was way back before social media etc. That part about the transfer, I was told is a fact. I have never asked TJ directly about this, but I do have a friend that wrestled with him, that told me the story.
