Something along the lines of he wasn’t that good as a junior in HS and they were the only school that offered him a scholarship I believe.  Made a big jump as a senior but wanted to honor his commitment for the first year

Sure, but spelling ... and grammar and mechanics are conventional, not ordained by some god on high. In everyday conversation, the only relevant question is "Does the error prevent communication?"
