Nil is going to short term ruin a lot of things.   Broken record I know.   Makes it hard to root for one year mercenaries.

Who’s the sellout out now. Got receipts from him from last year.

I dont hold his words from last year against him now.  At that point we had a potential trophy team coming back, still had Sunkist, still had top recruits lined up and still had Martoris support outside of Sunkist.  Sure the injuries sucked this year but now we are seeing what the lack of a RTC and the other support has the program looking.  Richie deserves the opportunity to go somewhere are finish his career with good training partners, facilities and maybe a different approach to wrestling.  Until something changes ASU is not going to hold on to top level wrestlers their entire career anymore

overlooked benefit of portal and NIL is it should tend to keep programs on their toes and at their best or pay the price.   Kids should have choices when programs/coaches disappoint.

And he also claims that the numbers are inaccurate and that he reached out to Iowa first and that the poaching stuff is bullspit.

But he's clearly lying right?  If there's one thing I'd learned from this thread, it's that wrestlers lie and that the transfers are "almost definitely" initiated by the poaching school's coaches long before entering the portal.

Bad Brands, bad! *slaps wrist*

Lol of course he's lying. It may be "technically true" as in like he reached out first, but it's extremely likely there was contact with intermediaries for both parties.

Maybe this is in another thread but what's going on with ASU?  I can see how losing the RTC hurt them, but what else is going on? Is it that Martori cut off other support too, so they've lost NIL funds?  Coaching issues Seems unlikely they'd be losing so many guys to transfer if there weren't something else going on beyond $.

The announcement isn't official yet, never has been made. I think that's what the announcement will be tomorrow, though.

Lying indeed!  But let's not water it down with this "there was contact" stuff, which makes it sound like innocuous sauna chatter with another team's wrestler during some random summer camp. We're talking coach-initiated, mid-season affirmative money inducements, and resulting "handshake" deals, such that the entire portal process is a sham, right?

Such as Brands telling Nichols (e.g. after Dean upset Lilledahl) "I want this guy, go get him, pay whatever you need to pay, but make sure to tell him to sit in the transfer portal for a few days before actually committing to make sure it seems like a fair and open process." Or Brands doing the dirty work himself, sneaking in a chat with Dean at NCAAs to convince him how $mart it is to transfer to Iowa.

In fact, I have it on good authority that in post-dual handshakes this year, Morningstar subtly palmed a "How Iowa's NIL Works" flyer (which includes Brands' burner phone #) to the opposing team's wrestlers as they "shook hands."

But it's no biggie since everyone does it.

Ok maybe the flyer went too far, but at least we agree that the fix was in on the Iowa/Dean thing *months* ago.  Yay!  :]

Somebody closer to it explained that Martori wanted certain things done and that ASU was not going to stay in the Pac 12, so they needed to get new blood as far as a coach. Zeke basically refused, and again this is what somebody closer to it told me, so Martori "retired" and shut down Sunkist, partially because of that. Word was they wanted to pursue Taylor or somebody like that. Zeke felt he should go on his own terms and that's where the disagreement was.

Thanks.  Is that what explains the transfers, Ludington decommitting, etc?

Not sure what to think about Zeke. Assistants and recruiting usually seems decent, they've developed some (e.g Schultz 5x AA, Figs last year), and they sure got more out of Parco/Teemer than Iowa did. But everyone seems to get hurt, and their best guys transferred out. Not sure if they have any NCAA points returning.

Hope they bounce back.

Your boss trains you to do something. you excel at your job and ask for a raise, they wont give it to you but someone else will bring you in for more money, should you be able to accept the offer or not?

Well then. Run it like a business. Throw in non competes and suck. Make these commitments 4 year contracts.

Let’s say this was allowed, do you think that would help or hurt the recruiting for teams who choose to operate that way? They would have to guarantee money for 4 years to guys who may not pan out and for some recruits it may be a turn off.

Or, you do what you can to develop guys, take care of them financially, and treat them well. Sure some might leave that last year of eligibility like Parco, Teemer, and Figs but recruits take notice and it probably is a net positive in the long term. Also, sometimes it may be a good business decision to let 5th and 6th year seniors go elsewhere.

Since you are an ASU fan, my recommendation would be for your coaches to spend less time moaning about guys leaving and more time touting the accomplishments that they had while at ASU and congratulating them on getting paid for that final year. That will go a long ways in the wrestling community IMO.

Shutdown the sham of college sports and the NCAA. The schools conferences and ncaa stealing of public funds. Go to what it is now. Amateur athletics. No such thing as a student athlete.
