Although I think Alirez would probably beat Bartlett, and I slightly favor him over Mendez too, I think Beau should be the new #1.  Both unbeaten and Beau has the stronger strength of schedule, and just beat #1.  That's my rationale, but the real reason is the same as BruceyB's:  I hate the fact that Bartlett and Mendez should have to face off in the semis for a third time just because Alirez never had to wrestle anyone in the top 10.

I assume undefeated alirez gets #1 seed…. If Mendez takes one at bigs.  The Algo and all.

Alirez won’t have enough matches for an RPI, IIRC.

🤔

OK, now do THIS year, not two years ago, since the context is how Alirez should be seeded THIS year.

I would guess WIN is basing it on 1 championship > 0 championships. I would have Bartlett #1 myself.

And Flo drops some time tonight.

But Bartlett JUST beat Mendez and it is (and should be) this season's rankings not across seasons.  If they hadn't wrestled this season, sure give Mendez the nod because he pulled out a last second win over Bartlett at NCAAs and beat him at Big Tens (even if Bartlett beat him in the dual last year).  The only way I can see ranking Mendez informally above Bartlett is if you also consider the All-Star match this year, but that is not supposed to count in official rankings

As I said, I would have Bartlett #1.

As for using just this season, you still need to prime this season with previous season results.

Bartlett is #1 on Flo, also.

I just saw that.  Bartlett and Mendez will likely meet again soon at B1Gs, though there are some other potential landmines in their path: Hardy, Vombaur, and Lemley being the top 3 contenders.

Yes. Alirez has ducked top 10 guys and has no great wins

He hasn't ducked anybody. I just checked his record out.  The only elite guy he "ducked" was Cael Happel, and the idea of Alirez ducking Happel is laughable. He wrestled Composto. He wrestled all the decently ranked guys on his schedule, including Ysaguirre, Tagg, and Drury, all of who will probably make NCAAs. Yeah, no premium wins, but he hasn't ducked anybody. He hasn't wrestled in any tournaments this year though so he only has his dual meet record to go on so far. Northern Colorado has a dual schedule filled with teams that generally don't have great 141 pounders this year, that's not Alirez's fault.

Alirez will probably win another 5 matches prior to NCAAs, which will make him 16-0. Guys saying he won't have enough matches are cuckoo.

I would disagree that he hasn't ducked. NWCA dual tournament he wrestled day 1 but didn't wrestle day 2. Was it a weight issue, was it a duck issue or was it load management? To many it looks like a duck. UNI & Iowa State had most of their team at Soldier Solute. Where where their starters for that?

uh, wut now?

What that means is if a guy is the best at his weight, a legitimate #1 seed, that he's going to win anyway regardless of who he faces in the bracket.

Why is it laughable to say he (well, Nickerson) ducked Happel?

One of the tournaments he didn’t wrestle in was won by Vombaur.

Because Alirez is a lot better than Happel.

I don’t know if we know that.  Looks like they haven’t wrestled since 2022

I'll sig bet you right now that if Alirez wrestles Happel that Alirez wins.

I’ll bet you that he won’t tech fall him.  Which is what someone “a lot better” would do.

I've seen guys who won 2-0 who were a lot better than their opponents.
