Thanks to everyone that has chimed in.  I enjoy reading your perspectives.

I too have thought about how nice it would be to have a "lighter weight" coach in the room, and Waters would be a good one.

There is just something about the "eye test" of watching the Mizzou duals, that something is missing with this team.  Watch the dual replays and notice the lack of fire in the coaches sitting on the side, or even the other Tigers on the team bench/area.  Just seems like zero emotion to me.  And a little fire might help in those "close" matches the Tigers are losing.

And I've stated it before, some of the Tigers just continue to do the same things over and over, losing close matches (Edmond now, Jacques past) and there doesn't seem to be any constructive corrective coaching to improve the strategy or technique.  That's the kind of things I look for when grading the success of a coaching staff.

When I coached, if I worked directly with a wrestler to make adjustments, do reps, etc... and then they continued to make the same choices on the mat, they found the bench until the "light turned on!"

Call it tough love.

Filling in some context on Mizz performance last year:

In the 33 seed era (5 years) the:

  • #12 seed goes 0-2 8% of the time and AA's 18% of the time (most common outcome is 1-2)
  • #15 seed goes 0-2 16% of the time and AA's 12% of the time (most common outcome is 1-2)
  • #22 seed goes 0-2 36% of the time and has never AA'd (most common outcome is 1-2)
  • #30 seed goes 0-2 80% of the time and has never AA'd (most common outcome is 0-2)

Zero wins sucks, but two or three wins is about what you expect from that group of seeds. Four is cause for celebration.

How have #33 seeds done?

Anecdotally, I remember Wyatt Sheets was a 33rd seeded AA

Wyatt Sheets is one of one.

As a result #33 seeds have gone 0-2 77% of the time (still better than 82% for #32 seeds) and AA'd 2% of the time.

  • Bob +1 1

Drowning in data, but thirsting for knowledge

Well and Wyatt wasn't the original 33 seed.  He didn't qualify.  Someone was injured and pulled out and he was next man up.  So more like #34.

  • Wrestle +1 1
  • Bob +1 1

it was Justin Ruffin from Edwardsville that had to drop out from injury

Good timing to bring this post forward and contrast comments about MU wrestling then in Jan 2025, and now.

I was vocal about MU needing a change then, and haven't changed my stance.

Enjoy reading your comments from then, many defending Smith, and your comments now, calling for change.  Same head coach, most the same staff, plus KO.  Add the recruiting class, but still a team that has fallen short maximizing talent.  It has cost us in departing talent, especially in the current state of NIL. Brian's done a great job building the Tigers to significance.  Now it's time to hand they keys to the car to a new driver, and destination.

I would agree 100% that it is time for a change and new blood.  Sometimes a new driver is needed, especially when the results are not improving and the overall effort or desire is not there.  Watching Edmond and Bates was just plain and simple pathetic!

The real test, in my opinion, will be next year when the new crop gets into the lineup full time….Seth, Rath, Bambi (maybe) and Stillwell. If they don’t perform well and if we see any decline from Mauger or Walker, it becomes a pretty noticeable pattern and will be hard to find excuses for.

Heiser might sneak into the lineup somewhere. Incoming freshman Aiden “cash” Cooley could potentially start at 197. Do we even have anyone on the roster for 197 currently? Trey Craig is also incoming. Maybe that’s why we had Mo Edenne in for a visit. 141 will be interesting. Hilton, Seltzer I could see splitting time. 157 Conway maybe. I’d like to see Rath there but I have no clue where he’s at recovery or weight wise.

After NCAA's last season, I was very frustrated & disappointed but not 100% in favor of a leadership change as I believed (and still do to a lesser extent) that Coach Smith deserved a long runway on his decision to depart.  He clearly did an outstanding job at building the Program from ashes.

A year later .... after watching Mizzou unable to retain Elam, the complete mishandling of 149, the unproductive incoming Portal guys, and the general overall lack of wrestler development ... I am of the belief that change is necessary sooner than later.  I am also bewildered why quality Missouri homegrown wrestlers like Roark, Fugitt, Woodcock, etc. weren't pursued ?

Overachievement at the upcoming NCAA's could of course temper my opinion.
