Is it time to start talking about Zeth Romney as a serious title contender at 133? He pinned Nasir Bailey today at national duals to add to a hit list that includes AA Evan Frost, NQ Jacob Van Dee, NQ Derrick Cardinal, NQ Braxton Brown, NQ Angelo Rini and NQ Kade Moore. He has one loss to Tyler Knox. Knox has the two most impressive wins on the season at 133; Ayala and Romney.

I'm sticking with my preseason selection of Lucas Byrd, but Romney has been incredible once again.  He was under the radar good last year as well.

He has definitely jumped a level. He seems very confident out there. Last year at CKLV he lost to Evan Frost 16-3. This year he beat him 7-3. Last year he got teched by Bouzakis 24-6 and this year he beat him 6-5. He lost to Nassir Bailey 7-1 last year and just pinned him. That is a seriously impressive turn around.

133 should be an 8 man round robin. 125 as well.

Max Gallagher #30 just beat #12 Tanner Jordan - could be a lot of volatility at NCAA's

Any details on the Romney/Bailey match before the pin? Was it a move from neutral, or did he do it from TB position?

I only saw this little replay, but it offers some context at least:

Just watched the entire match, that is all the context you need. Romney was definitely more active in looking for an angle in the first, but Nasir really just stood their and disengaged, not giving anything up but not even remotely looking for any offense.

I was surprised when Romney and Bailey were walking back to center, however, that Bailey actually looked bigger than Romney, and Romney looked huge at CKLV. It could have just been the angle, or it could also help explain some of Bailey's struggles this season if he's not able to compete his best at 133.

Romney just horsed him over in the second, and with the lack of action up to that point, it's kind of hard to imagine Bailey was that tired.

Edit: Until I see Crookham lose, he's the favorite. I would give Romney as good a shot as anyone else in the field to make the finals though. Looking at last year's results, I don't think Crookham gave up a TD to anyone other than Vito.

One of my kids' coaches used to train with Zeth Romney at titan mercurcy, so it gives us a random reason to root for him

Wait Titan Mercury actually has practices?

they do for youth anyway.  another father at our club as well as this particular coach both recommended the place for our kids if we wanted to step up and take it a bit more seriously.  we have not gone down that route as of yet.

He looks like a larger 125.  I bet he walks around off season low to mid 140s.  I'd guess he has a tough cut.

I've always assumed that pretty much every full sized 125 would be in that weight range in the offseason, no? Walk around 140-145, pre-season follow a strict diet to hopefully close to 130-135 and cut whatever you necessary to make the weight? I don't have any recent first hand knowledge of what people are cutting at the D1 level, I know it's less than the old days, but even around 10 pounds seems probable for most 125s.

TJ can beat some really good guys with his scrambling and riding ability (like Sprately 2x last year) but there is a certain type of athleticism that he struggles with. He’s a gamer and will be an AA contender come March. He’s tough as nails.

The kid has not taken a legit shot all year.  Just try’s to dance and counter, if stalling was truly enforced he would DQ by third period every match.

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
