I remember Matt McDonough had a headgear that looked like it was an antique from the Gable era, held together with dirty athletic tape.

It may have been but I know around that time it was “cool” to have dirty athletic tape on your headgear, I did it myself.  Looking back that was definitely unsanitary.

But to the OP, yes that would be a good idea, not sure why guys don’t do it.  Of course a better idea would be to make headgear optional in matches (but required in practices where most cauliflower ear is gotten anyway)

I agree. In college, we were all given new headgear at that beginning of the year, and everyone already had their own anyway. It seems reasonable that every athlete has a "backup" headgear in their bag incase something happens.

I also agree with making headgear optional in matches, but I think it would have to follow the international rules where you can request your opponent removes it. I would hate to wrestle someone like Vito wearing the old CK hard plastic headgear.

FWIW, I got my ears busted in practice.

Ya we were given headgear in college too.  But imagine someone trying to find “my bag” in the middle of a match.  Would be a nightmare too.   Just wrestle without it for remainder of match if your cool with it fwiw.

Well, with the rule change you would give your backup headgear to your coach prior to the stepping on the mat. Like the old "blood rag check" in FS the ref would confirm each coach has their athlete's spare. But I agree, if you have an issue with your headgear, finish the match without it.

I was just explaining that to some club kids. They were digging how low cut the singlets were.

Tbh it happens so infrequently I would be annoyed having to carry two sets all the time.  It is annoying when they break though I’ll give u that but it doesn’t happen all that much.

It could light up...

like a bunch of scorpions hanging out it their lair.

OR

worse yet... like a police detective's black light at a crime scene,

IF, you know what I mean. 😏

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
