Seems like their best guys this year will be:

Parco (ASU)

Teemer (ASU)

Caliendo (NDSU)

Buchanan (Wyoming, Oklahoma)

Meanwhile homegrown studs like Ayala and Brands aren't looking so hot...

What does this say about Iowa when all their best guys weren't actually developed in the Iowa room?

If all the transfers improve upon their last NCAA finish this year then I think that is a positive signal regarding the coaches' ability to develop

Or that people above them switched weights or graduated.

So Teemer has to win it, since he was runner up last year.

Parco, Caliendo and Buchanan would all have to at least make the finals since they are all already multiple time AAs.

Well it is apparent look at Brands development.   Not sure if it is a recruiting issue, development issue or both.

I think its 85% a recruiting issue. They've been forced into the portal.

Which is why it's longer even remotely sorta good.

We have needed a transfer at this weight for a long time. I really thought that Juan Mogen would pan out.

No one is forced into portal unless they can’t develop their recruits.

Got a list of the psu recruits that were recruited over?

i feel the need to point out that athletes aren't supposed to develop or recruit other athletes.

You are correct. At this point I'd say there is no right or wrong way to built a roster. Traditional recruiting and the portal are both assets to programs but I think relying to heavily on the portal is never going to be good enough at this point to truly compete on a consistent basis. I think the best programs will still rely on recruiting the majority of the time to build their lineup while supplementing any holes with pieces from the portal.

The problem I see for Iowa is that they have been the opposite over the last however many years. They are building the backbone of their team through the portal and using their recruiting to fill in the holes.  They are still the clear number two program in the country but other programs are knocking on the door and if they want to claw their way back to the top they are going to have to do a heck of a lot better job recruiting guys.

Iowa has gotten some pretty good mileage out of its transfers over the years... Cal, ADS, Woods, Eierman, Lugo, Metcalf (technically), etc. It's odd if Jimmy thinks things would change under today's transfer portal and pay-to-play rules.

What is the reoccurring theme here? Excluding Metcalf, all came seeking gold and left without it. All had similar results at Iowa that they had at their previous schools.
