Penn State vs Cornell---why no home duals?

It seems Penn State and Cornell have not wrestled each other in a regular season home dual since 2008....when two of the top teams in the country are just 3 hrs apart..... why no duals in the Cael era?---while Cornell would not have much of a shot in most years....the competition would be great for the fans....

These coaches have a balls in the air as far as conference requirements, and Cornell has to deal with the EIWA and the IVY league, both of which their donors care about. Even though its a good idea the stars have to align to some extent.

What would the upside have been for Penn State?

I don’t know.  Grow the sport?

It’s like the same guy scheduling the tomato cans bo nikal has been fighting made this schedule though.

It’s totally what the fans want.   Ha.    A bunch of backups winning 42-3.

It is what the fans of the smaller schools want. They want to see their team sell more tickets, they want to get up close and personal with the best. It is why many of these teams publicly thank PSU for scheduling them.

Cornell has a great fan base, and is a consistent top 10 team challenging for a trophy almost every year. There would be several ranked matches each time they wrestle so I don't see the downside for scheduling a top opponent a short bus ride away. It seems that there must be a distinctive reason as I can't name another two schools in the top 10 who are within 200 miles of each other and basically never wrestle.

Caveira isn't going to listen to any facts presented to him here.

Not sure I would call Cornell a small wrestling school. Very true for the likes of current non conference scheduling of Drexel, and Wyoming (small for wrestling). PSU often wrestles Lehigh in a non-conference dual as Cornell is a step above Lehigh in terms of tradition. Is there a beef between Cael and Cornell as they last wrestled in 2008 before Cael arrived?

They wrestled on 12/20/2021.

There were 8 current/future national champions in that dual and none of them wrestled each other.

Just wanna fact check this.  The argument is scheduling mainly small non competitive duals is good for the sport?   That is what the collective fans want.   Is that a fact or an opinion?

mind u.   The original answer was what is in it for psu….. so what part of the growing wrestling is that?

No, I'm referring to the fact that many of the coaches of non-B1G, smaller market teams that Cael schedules publicly thank him for bringing the team out to wrestle.

See: Chris Pendleton last year, who was quite effusive in his thanks.

My response was very clear.

Excellent word usage.

I would definitely have Lehigh ahead of Cornell in terms of tradition.  Is Cornell better, now?  Yes, of course.  That is relatively recent though. Lehigh also (narrowly) holds the edge in the dual meet series.

Ivy League schools are no longer part of the EIWA. If Cornell wants to schedule this meet, they would have the flexibility and where with all to do so. Not judging, but guessing any issues moving forward would be on the side of Penn State.

Does Cornell sell out all home duals? Do they do so with season ticket holders?

I'm all for a PSU-Cornell dual, but tbf the regular conference schedule is pretty brutal for any of the B1G schools

When people say, "Such and such school has a tough out of conference schedule! So brutal!", it's almost always a school from the ACC or similar where they hit a handful of top 10 teams and maybe one or two of the top 5.

Penn State, Iowa, Ohio State are going to be wrestling most of the top 5 teams in the country every year.

Looking at Penn State's schedule, they have 5 of the other 6 top 7 schools scheduled for duals. Mizzou, Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio State. Only missing Oklahoma State.

that's a ridiculous strawman. The "grind" of a big ten schedule is commented on so often that its closer to being a universally accepted fact than neglected reality. Its the reason PSU doesn't hit the hard in season tournaments, the dual meet season is enough.

What do you mean that is a ridiculous strawman?

A straw man fallacy (sometimes written as strawman) is the informal fallacy of refuting an argument different from the one actually under discussion.
