I thought the official Campbell wrestling page had posted to donate to the school, but unless I am misremembering, that post appears to be gone.  The guy that made this original post is now suggesting to donate to the RTC instead (Buies Creek Wresdling Club).

I can only find a Facebook page for them: https://m.facebook.com/Buiescreekwc/

But the Facebook page did have a donation link:

Seeing the questions above about what the logic is behind not allowing scholarship athletes to compete.  One suggestion that it is about title IX - which maybe it is but it doesn’t sound quite right.  Anyone have more concrete info on this?  Really weird.

Sorry to see this.  Yes, I expect it in the start of the large dislocation all these changes will bring.

Hey, now that's not very nice of you.  You obviously have no clue about attendance.  Campbell has been lucky to draw 50 people at a dual.  Students have no idea the program even exists.

Facts say otherwise on attendance. Based on your post history, you don’t seem to like wrestling very much. I hope you find joy in another sport.

Insert catchy tagline here.

They averaged over 400 per dual last season... what were you saying about having no clue about attendance?

Why do they use the example of donating to wrestling scholarships if those receiving the scholarships are not allowed to compete?

Craig Henning got screwed in the 2007 NCAA Finals.

Yeah... I don't get that whole  "You get 3 scholarships, but you can't compete if you have one" thing.... can someone explain to this simple guy how that works?

The scholarship athletes not being allowed to compete cannot be accurate. That is an absolute legal shit storm brewing if true.

Right? It's insane that scholarship athletes will not be allowed to compete. Wtf?

I am not "special knowledge" but if the scholly guys return and keep the money without being on the team it is no longer an athletic scholarship.

My guess on this issue:

1) they are "opting in" which means roster has to get down to 30 next year.  And Football scholarships go up from 85 to 105 (+20).  Nothing in another Intermat article that they also took scholarships from mens & womans golf, tennis and another sport.  I think what they must be doing is taking scholarships from those 6 teams pus the wrestling team to come up the the 20 more  scholarships that they will give to football.

2) saying current scholarship folks  can't compete helps them quit and therfore helps get the roster down to 30.

3) In my experience when the wrestler signs the nationial letter of intent and then the scholarship Grant In Aid with financial aid office it is for the full 4 years (at least in the case of one of my family members).  The document basically says if you are off the team (because of reasons like cut because not good wrestler anymore, hurt, etc) you still keep your scholarship.  So I would presume if these scholarship kids are cut and just students, then they can still walk around as a student at Campbell without wrestling and STILL be getting their athletic contracted scholarship.  In this case you have taken scholarships from wrestling in theory, but if those kids are still students getting paid, you have not eliminated thosed scholarships to give to the football team.  BUT if you kinda force the kid to quit Campbell university by not letting him compete, then when he leaves the actual scholarship money becomes available to give to football.

Just my reasoned guess.

They offer this as cover, IMO. I cannot speak from authority.  Speculation only.

Also, which was mentioned in a different Intermat article (I think) they joined a conference the Coastal Athletic Conference (I guess must have been in Big south or something I read).  When I took the time to compare Campbell list of athletic teams and the teams that the Coastal Athletic Conference hosts.  Other than Cheerleading (which campbell has both men and women team) the only sport that CAA doesn't host that Campbell has is wrestling (they wrestle in the SoCon).  Obvious outliner team (wrestling) that doesn't fit the athletic department profile of other CAA teams gets screwed.

What a sh1tty position to put these guys in.  Make them choose between having their education paid for or being able to wrestle.

Could be wrong, but I think they’re saying 3 guys on scholarship can in fact compete.  But the rest of the current guys on scholarship can’t if they want to keep the scholarship.

Thanks to Jason Bryant for including a link to this story in his newsletter this morning.

The school's statement may indicate Campbell has bigger problems. Given Campbell's size, the school's finances should be healthier than this. Maybe not.

In a statement, the school said it evaluated operation expenses and made “strategic decisions” to ensure the future of the school, which is located in Buies Creek.

“We’ve asked for the cooperation of various departments and units, including Campbell Athletics, who are helping us in this goal of institutional strength,” the university said in a statement.

The school said the among the cost-cutting measures are athletic scholarships across multiple sports. The school did not elaborate on which of its 21 athletic teams would face cuts.

That doesn’t explain the “you can have a scholarship as long as you don’t wrestle” line then.  That just moves the expense to a different bucket.

It sounds like the school is cutting scholarships to 3 starting next school year, but will be grandfathering-in the current 6.9 scholarship recipients with the condition that they won't be able to compete if they accept it. Which is bananas.

Regarding finances, the school itself has a decent reserves in its endowment, compared to the other CAA schools. The athletic budget is another story. Imo, Campbell fans & alums should be calling for the AD's resignation for two incredibly stupid moves: the first, was joining the CAA as if it would bring in more revenue or raise Campbell's profile relative to increases in travel, facilities, etc. Sorry, but most sports fans don't even know that Campbell has a football or basketball team, let alone one that could become an FBS program or big dance basketball team.

The second is opting-in to revenue sharing and paying athletes, which introduces roster caps and cost-cutting. I guess the AD thinks having salaried football & basketball players will produce winning programs, while pushing the funding of non-revenue sports to fans & NIL. Which is crazy.

Despite its successes, Campbell Wrestling is in a particularly bad spot, as someone pointed out earlier that it's the only one of its sports that the CAA doesn't compete in. But all sports except for baseball/softball, mens & womens track & cross country, cheer, and women's lacrosse & swimming (for Title IX compliance) will be facing cuts. Bazemore needs to get her priorities straight.

Do we know if current AD who mentions she has two degrees from Campbell, participated in College sports while there?

Doesn't look like it. Bazemore played basketball, volleyball, and softball in hs but didn't compete in college. She was manager of the women's basketball team, then a grad assistant, and a student employee in the athletics dept, but not an athlete. Her parents are also Campbell alums but I don't think they played any sports. IIRC her dad was the Dean of Student Life. Small community.
