A lot has transpired since Swid and Mendez last wrestled lol. Like Jesse Mendez winning an NCAA title and being an absolute hammer. I am not sure that Swid and Mendez have the same level of commitment year round to being the best in the world at wrestling.

Obviously, I am pro Iowa state here, so this is going to come across as biased. BUT, before this year, I would agree with this comment, this is the first year, CS has stayed "in it" year around. They worked all summer long and he brought the frost brothers along. I think he is maturing and figuring out how to be a leader. I am not in any way saying he can beat Mendez, I am saying he should be better mentally and shape wise.

he sates exactly what you mentioned above about being i year-round with the frost boys'

also stated arounf the 1:23 mark " i will do what ever that old man tells me to do "

He is a leader by example, not a big hoorah type guy. I had hoped he would RS only because I think he can get better at wrestling. Not a jab at him, I just think there is more he can learn. ie. top game, etc. It is hard to keep him out of a lineup because he is gritty as hell, and leaves it all out there. A lot of guys feed off of that.

U23 World Team just to clarify.
But in regards to his college results, he is 20-5 combined for his career. Yes, he lost 7-4 to Jack last year. But, was also pinned by Kelvin Griffin (Lehigh backup) and lost 4-1 to Cross Wasilewski (who was in HS last year). His best career win is probably over his teammate Fernandez or maybe Ethen Miller (back in January of 2022) who is 2-4 in his last two NCAAs. Hard to take that resume over Fernandez or Cornella.

You make good points there. Although I think Wasilewski was at penn already just in the RTC program. Either way still a loss to a much younger opponent, albeit a tough one.

Swiderski is a damn good wrestler. IMO, he hurt his transition by trying to hold 141 his first year. When he wrestled Mendez post-HS, he was much larger than Mendez and bullied him physically, unsurprisingly.

I'm personally skeptical that it's a good idea for CS to try 141 again like some here have mentioned, but if he can make the weight in a disciplined way and ISU can be strategic in when they ask him to make it, he'll definitely be a threat.

I was glad to see Davino control Gonzales, Bouzakis needs to step up or he may lose his spot.

True frehman E'than Birden lost 1-1 to returning starter Hepner at 165. Birden solid D needs to work on some offense during his RS year.

That kid looks like he could be a monster up at 174 after a RS year. He's so long, athletic...but the few times I've seen him, he wrestles so conservatively. If he just opens up, with his defense, he's savvy...he could be a fun kid to watch.

Another year from now, Birden at '74, Welsh at '84, Ryder goes up to '97, Feldman, that could be a helluva run to go with the bottom half of that lineup. I don't know if it's quite enough to beat PSU...but it's not hard to see them giving them a run.

They need a couple kids to jump levels but man, they have some horses.

Trumble can't down to '97 anymore?  Trephan is awfully good to be riding the pine.

I guess I'll be picking him at HT this year.

He reminds me of Tommy Rowlands so much. I get that's a lofty comp, Rowlands...he went, what, 1, 2, 6, 1...so ya know, not quite the same trajectory, but I think it's entirely possible he ends up in the same place. Beating a bigger Penn State Wrestler in the finals.

Trephan is a helluva Wrestler to be watching from the bench though.

Would be cool to see Babin and the Santaniello bros start the first 3 weights being they’re all from NJ

I think you're one of few who weren't surprised by that result.

They have Evan Tallmadge (NJ) at 125 as well, who he and Vincent Santaniello both transferred from Navy (and in HS Anthony was also committed to Navy at one point).

Nebraska has their wrestle off finals this coming Saturday at 10am. Open to the public and the matches are taking place in the wrestling room.

Shoutout to Dylan Guenther with Corn Nation for keeping tabs on this:

The most interesting matches should be 125/165/174. I think both Lauridsen and Araujo are heading for RS seasons but if either guy pulled off an upset that would be something. I guess I'd be way more surprised to see Araujo knock off Pinto. Minto at 165 had a nice run and beat Condomitti 12-4.

125- Caleb Smith (Sr.) vs. Kael Lauridsen (Fr.)

133- Jacob Van Dee (So.) vs. Hayden Mills (So.)

141- Brock Hardy (Jr.) vs. Blake Cushing (Jr.)

149- Ridge Lovett (Sr.) vs. Scott Robertson (R-Fr.)

157- Antrell Taylor (So.) vs. Weston Dalton (R-Fr.)

165- Bubba Wilson (Sr.) vs. Christopher Minto (R-Fr.)

174- Lenny Pinto (Jr.) vs. LJ Araujo (Fr.)

184- Silas Allred (Jr.) vs. Marco Christiansen (Fr.)

197- Camden McDanel (Fr.) vs. Adam Thebeau (R-Fr.)

285- Harley Andrews (So.) vs. Matthew Moore (R-Fr.)

Didn't Hardy graduate from high school in 2018?  I get the whole LDS mission thing. but am surprised he is only a junior.  Any redshirts left for him to take?

Hardy to my knowledge only has two more years left. He's used up both his traditional RS year plus his Covid year.

It looks like his career went:

20/21--True Frosh

21/22--Redshirt year

22/23--Covid year (i.e. RS Fresh Season)

23/24--Sophomore

24/25--Junior

Ha, yeah he's pushing the limits for sure. Between his LDS mission and the Covid year he'll be a super duper Senior in terms of age.

Why would anyone be surprised by a 138# Mendez losing to a 152# Swiderski?

Swiderski wrestled 141 at a college open in December of 2021 (their senior year). It was pretty well known that he went up 2 weights (at least) for the team. Dundee won the team title that year and had a state champ at 145, a blood rounder at 140, and a state champ at 135.

The ability to cut down for one tournament does not make them the same size. You don't need to embellish any sacrifices Swiderski made for his team to make me think he's good. I know he's good. He has been for a long time. But he was significantly bigger than Mendez when they did the hype match and it benefited him. I don't know why that got your panties in a twist.

For reference: CS went 106>135>145>152 in HS for the state series.  Mendez went 126>132>138>138.

I was actually originally just complimenting you by saying that you were one of the few that picked him to beat Mendez back in HS.

Then I defended my original statement by trying to explain why the majority of the public picked Mendez to beat him. Sorry if it came off the wrong way. Wasn't my intention to offend.

Minnesota doesn't do official wrestle-offs, but the open practice yesterday gave some indications. Salazar seems to have the edge over Nelson and Nagel at 197, who both would be solid starters.  Brandon Morvari and Cooper Flynn were very close at 125, but neither opened up much so hard to say for sure.  Bennett Tabor has put on good weight at Hwt, and I think will jump up significantly in the rankings. Max McEnelly is going to be a problem for a lot of 184 pounders.  Tommy Askey, Andrew Sparks, Drew Roberts, Vance Vombaur, and Clayton Whiting also looked in great shape and favorites to start at their perspective weights.  Tyler Wells at 133 did not participate yesterday.

Thanks MNRodent!  How did the freshman look (Millard, Hopke, Duchateau, etc.)?

Do you have a feeling on how 165 and 197 will look next year after Sparks/Salazar move on?  I'd guess Brenner and Nelson would move into the starting lineup?

Hopke tore his pec first week on campus, unfortunately.

At 197, Nelson is right there with Salazar. Not sure on 165.
