He wrestled Bartlett several times....who was always 141, no?  Did he bump up for the post season?

He wrestled Bartlett at a catch weight (190 I think). At the catch weight tourney. Nick Lee was there too

Sasso did look very very good at 70kg at the us open. He blew that lead to Berger and gave up a last second takedown. Berger was able to beat dee then this year at 74kg which is not his optimal weight. Thats a lot of extrapolating of things that don't really pertain to this matchup very much, but I think that version of Sasso definitely looked better than the one that was killing himself to make weight during the NCAA season. I still don't think this is a match but that's largely in part to it being against MM I still think Sasso at his best is one of the better guys to not win a title.

I find it incredible that Sasso may even crack the starting lineup in a room as tough as tOSU after such a catastrophic injury. That alone is an amazing comeback story.

65 is only Hepner and Carter...

Still, Hepner is a NQ level guy. To be almost dead from gun shot wounds to being able to beat someone as good as him him and earn the starting spot would be an amazing comeback. Does that mean that Kharchla is going 174 and Welsh redshirt or Carson rides the bench?

Kharchla may go 184.

I don't think Sasso is capable of generating enough of his own offense to beat Mesenbrink. Sure, he might be able to beat him in a scramble off of MM's shot. He might lock up a cradle, and might be able to deck him.

But unless he's able to score early and build up several minutes of riding time, Mesenbrink will run him down. If MM scores first, game over, in my opinion.

I think the reason he can't generate enough offense is less about Sasso's ability to get to a leg or score, but more because of Mesenbrink and his relentless motor.

He WILL run him down as you say. If he scores first or if he's down...6-0 after the first. There are a couple of Wrestlers I believe could beat him from '57 to '74..and one of them is a teammate now, one was a teammate(I believe) for a year in HS...or at least they went to the same HS.

Sasso coming off of a full healthy season at 157, with an offseason to put on appropriate size/strength?  Sure, that matchup would've made for an interesting style clash.

Let's just see if Sasso can even compete.  The guy was at death's door just a year ago, couldn't walk for months, and still has major limitations.  The fact that he's alive is amazing; everything else is just bonus at this point.

Personally I'm just hoping he's able to take the mat on senior night.  That's more than enough for me.

I fear Kharchla may be too small for 184.

I'd really like to see Kharchla at 174 and Hepner to 184 with Welsh and Rogotzke RS'ing.

Kharchla was a huge 165 pounder and a big 174 pounder. Hepner was an average size 165. If Welsh and Rogotze redshirt it would make way more sense to have Shumate go 184.

I believe Shumate is too large for 184lbs as of now.

Hepner is small.  I wouldn't even say average at 165lbs.  I would say, though, that his mat game is reliant on not being smaller.  He loses a lot of strength if he goes up.

Kharchla had no issues with size against Lewis at the RTC cup the year Lewis went 174lbs and took 2nd.  I know it was freestyle, but size is size.

It’s incredibly impressive that Sasso is apparently able to wrestle again at all. However, what % of the old Sasso will he be after the injury he sustained? 50%, 60%? Now add in that he’s wrestling up two  weights and it doesn’t bode well against Mesenbrink. I respect the Hell out of Sasso, but I don’t like his chances here.

I'm not saying he's back to 100%. I can say with certainty i have seen videos of him wrestling and he's better than 90%of the country right now...two weights up.

There is no data to support this, though.  He is beating on guys that he was beating on before when he was two weights down?  Is there a measurable difference in the gap that has widened between him, Paddy, Hepner, etc?  I have also seen videos of him training... most of us had, and that is why we are saying that we need to temper expectations.

We will all root for him to win, I don't know a soul that won't, but nobody in their right mind would pick him over Mesenbrink without actually seeing him take the mat against someone of some sort of merit at 165lbs.

Hepner isn't small. He pushes 190 in the offseason and is tall for 165. That said he can't beat any of the guys above him and likely isn't strong enough either.

I understand that, but before last year he was at 157lbs.  Weight-wise... which is what we use to determine weight classes, he is small.

his success can not only be acknowledged by what Sasso  achieves on the mat this year

survival from the horrific act of violence is the only success that matters

anything and everything else is secondary

I don't think you'll find a single soul on these forums that believes otherwise.
