Purdue Struggling?

Just noticed Purdue took two pretty big losses to Drexel and Campbell.  Last year they looked solid and like they were on their way up.  Are a number of starters out?  Injuries?  Or is this just where they are again?

They are right where they always are. I do hope they break their AA drought this year but it isn’t likely. Copass will be their best bet the next 4 years to break that streak.

Ramos made the R12 up a weight last year and Coleman just needs to stay healthy , he has multiple wins over Robb, Lewan, knocked off guys like berge and young in his career…both of these guys could be on podium this year

They were primed for a solid team and individual finish the Covid year, but have fell off a little since then.

They need someone to finally end that dcade long run.  Coach Ersland has been there a long time and he seems like a great recruiter, but maybe beating Indiana most the time is good enough.

I've only had a couple of interactions with Coach Ersland but he seems like a class individual, and I've heard nothing but great things about him as a coach. Everyone I know that visited or got recruited by them had positive things to say about them.

Honestly 157 is wide open and couldn’t be shocked to see Coleman make a run to the finals , he’s as good as anyone else at the weight , and Ramos is real tough , I think they both break through this season

Random fan here that never wrestled, but I may be able to provide a few insights.  Purdue has had several good years in a row from 2019-last year, but they are very young this year, so while recently they have had a really solid lineup (7 or 8 NQs with several possible AAs that are voodoo hexed never to make it (Brunner, Lydy, Schroder, etc...)  This year they are wrestling a LOT of younger guys.

 

No, they rarely lose to teams like Drexel, but they're young this year.  Doesn't help that for reasons unknown to me, 197 blood round/possible AA Penola isn't wrestling this year, so they are going from 3/4 studs down to 2/3,  with many weights currently looking like they aren't going to NQ.

 

Currently it seems like 125, 141, 157 are the only NQ locks, and Purdue may get one or two more in with good Big Tens, which is definitely down.

I don't know anything about that, outside of the fact that he rassled at Nebraska a few years back.

He was a stud for Nebraska and was ranked highly a few different times. He failed to AA during his career.

I knew all about that,  as I said.  I just didn't know how to answer your question as to why Purdue brought him on,  which was news to me before today.

It’s just ironic that they are underperforming at NCAA’s so they hired a former wrestler that underperformed at NCAA’s

Unless one can “acquire” talent. The trend in wrestling for mid tier programs is this. The athletes are either 1-3s or 7-10s. The days of having the “average” guys around a 4-6 if you will is disappearing

Coach Reyes and Coach Hinkle had All-Americans year in and year out.  I would think the Purdue faithful would start being a little concerned at this point.

Purdue had 20 All-Americans in those 22 years.  If you said All-American year in and year out you'd be closer.
