put it this way, Argentina (i think) just held a national election that was all wrapped up in 16hrs.

California meanwhile just had an election where the results were pending for a week or so.

Edit to add that Argentina has 33% more people than Cali

Voter ID is fine as long as there is no charge for it. It might make sense to open in person voting to at least one whole week or a month with voter id so people can get the chance to vote

this is a great point. it’s a lot harder to vote when you are a service worker or nurse or someone working a long shift that takes up most of not all the voting hours.

France uses paper ballots and knows the results by the next morning.

WE surely couldn't do that. That would be way to easy. The news media would go crazy. No waiting for a week or two to get all the results in from all the different states. Only 50 thousand votes separated Trump from winning in the last election. Having a week or 2 to tabulate the results is ripe for fraud.

We could, and we will, if we ever get serious about the security of our country.

Most all states offer at least one week of early voting.  IMO If you can’t find a way to vote in a week it’s probably not that important to you.

Those are the key words. (if it's Important to you). To some of us voting is a privilege and a duty. We take it seriously. If necessary, we will stand for hours but thank goodness we have early voting.

that's fine. i still want to know why you should have to pay for the right to vote.

So everyone should get reimbursed for gas (or should it be Fed auto mileage rate ~$0.60/mi, what if have subway access or Uber) and time off to drive to the polls to vote?  Should execs get reimbursed at their $1,000/hr rate & McD workers at minimum wage or should we all get the same?  Why shouldn't everyone have a little skin in the game?

Then let's just have a national holiday to vote.  Why do we need so many days for Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year's, MLK, Presidents Day etc?  Let just take one of those back and give all a full day to vote, isn't it more important?

Quite literally everybody does already have skin in the game by being a tax payer

Not everyone is a tax payer about 40% don't pay.    And what does taxes have to do with it?

People pay taxes no matter what, whether it be sales tax or other taxes, literally every single person pays some sort of tax. Paying these taxes entitles you to representation in your government and the right to vote for that representation. Remember, no taxation without representation

I'm willing to bet that 80% of voting age people have an ID.    I've had an ID since I was 16.   Some places require an ID to buy alcohol even if you are 70.   Sheetz in PA requires an ID to buy tobacco in spite of age.      The only reason to not require ID for voting is Fraud.

Are you saying that a foreign visitor or someone here illegally who pays sales tax on a candy bar should be allowed to vote in our election?  Different taxes have different purposes.  Here, sales tax goes to pay for city, county, and state operations.  Car tags go to schools.  Gas goes to highways.  Property taxes go to local governments, much of it to schools.  Payroll taxes go to SS and medicare.  Income taxes go to the state and federal government.  If you don’t pay federal income tax, how can you claim the right to vote in elections for federal officers?

Totally unnecessary.  If voting isn’t important enough for you to make the effort to overcome your inconvenience, then it’s not important to you.  There’s nothing wrong with that.

why does voting have to be important to you? we’re all citizens. this is supposed to be a democracy. make it easy as possible.

why don’t you want as many people as possible to vote?

If someone is living here in America whether it be legally or illegally they pay sales tax that like you said goes to pay for city, county, and state operations I believe they should be able to vote in those elections because they are directly being taxed so they should be able to vote for representation. Some Homeless people do not have jobs and therefore do not pay federal income tax, should they not be able to elect federal officers even though they are citizens?
