I'm always at NCAA's....#45, 39 in row, and Mallory was D2 (Montclair State)....his coach was Jim Peckham, who along with Bill Wieck (Mt. Carmel,ILL.) coached some of the USA teams in the early 70's.

Mallory (Montclair St)  was DIII guy. Peckham was his club coach as he did not have a HS team. Only competed in Mass States once, his senior were he won. He ended up winning four NCAA titles (1 DI and 3 DIII)

Zadick was #1 his senior year and I think he was 7th or 8th.

He took 7th.  Maldonado the #7 seed took 6th

Percival from Ohio put a beating on him in quarters.

I remember I was walking around the far side of the mats from this mat for some reason. What a roar from the Ohio U crowd! 😉

Pretty wild to think that the last 13 times a #7 seed has made the final, they have lost.

Until you realize that all 13 times the #7 hit the #1 in the final.

For the #7 to win (or #10, etc), they really need the #1 to get knocked off first.

How many of the 13 No. 7 seed finalists beat the No. 2 seed?

My assumption is that it's unlikely, but it would be interesting if they all wrestled exactly to the assumed seed after beating the No. 2.

10, 2, 3 is the highest seeds the 7 could beat on the way to the final. That happened 6 of 13 times.

There was also a UR, 2, 3 combo. So beating 2 and 3 happened 7 of 13 times.

But just beating 2 with any other combination happened 12 of 13 times.

That makes sense since in the 12 seed era (10 of the 13 years) the 2 would get UR, UR before meeting the 7. In the 16 seed era (2 of the years) it was UR, 15. And last year it was 31, 15.

That is really incredible. Did not have a high school team . Which means he did not have a normal wrestling season. Yet won his state championship.

17 to 4 . Wow that a beat down. Jake was a tough guy.  Did Jake end up having some injuries that really hampered his career?

Carlton Haselrig was the same.

Not sure how often this has happened in D1 but today at the NAIA nationals the top 8 seeds at 133 will all place in the top 8 - not in order but all 8 will be in the top 8   Heavy has 7 of the 8 seeds placing

It has happened twice in recent years. But I only looked back to 2010.

Nice work gents! 13 times but Not in the last 10 years.  I’m guessing they never have finished in the order of seeding.

None have been in order. There is a five way tie for the closest. 2013 - 133 above is an example of one of the five. The absolute difference between seeds and places was 6.

Few fun facts about seeds = placement:

580 times the final place matched the seed

The most in a single weight class is 5, which has happened 9x (2017 - 197 is the most recent)

  • 4 = 31x
  • 3 = 94x
  • 2 = 189x
  • 1 = 257x

Back when there were only 4 seeds the placements were exact in 1942 @ 155 & 1959 @ 130. It has never happened with more than 4 seeds.

The weight with the most seed=places is 177, which has happened 67x.

The most times in a year it has happened is 2006 with 25.

The least amount of times in a year (with at least 8 seeds) is 2007 with only 9x.

Per seed - the number of times it has happened:

  • 401 (1st)
  • 232 (2nd)
  • 137 (3rd)
  • 110 (4th)
  • 68 (5th)
  • 60 (6th)
  • 44 (7th)
  • 34 (8th)

1942 155lb bracket finished exactly as seeded, think that gives an absolute difference of 0.   🙂
