The NCAA Division I Council approved changes to the transfer portal windows that will shrink the number of days for student-athletes to enter their name in the portal.

The rule change will impact all sports and give players 45 total days throughout the year to enter their names into the transfer portal.

Each sport will have 45 total days, but it will be divided differently by sport. For example, before this rule change, the window for football would open the day after the College Football Playoff teams are announced, which was Dec. 4 in 2022, and would stay open for 45 days.

What is the overall purpose of this ruling? Is the NCAA now trying to put some control on the chaos of the transfer portal and which loophole will colleges coaches find to manipulate it?

It appears so.  They want to limit "abuse" of the portal.

Has Bono signed off on this change?

Doubtful.

“The goal is to really try to find some balance between allowing student-athletes an opportunity to evaluate their transfer opportunities but also providing some opportunity for coaches and their staff to focus on their current student-athletes — and to understand what their rosters are going to look like,” Lynda Tealer, the chair of the Division I Council, said last week. “At some point, coaches are going to need to have some period of time where they’re neither in-season nor fully recruiting. Where we are right now, there is no opportunity for them not to be fully engaged in that way. That’s not really a sustainable way for people to approach their jobs.”

I thought it was the results of lobbying from coaches and programs. They wanted to cut the transfer portal window in half to 30 days, but the NCAA settled on 45. Probably to strike a balance between opportunities for athletes and helping coaches to get a handle on planning and managing a roster and recruiting.

Bad news for wrestling programs who heavily rely on transfers like Iowa

Not really.

"The Division I Council had proposed changes to the portal in January that would have seen a reduction from 60 total days to 30, but voted Tuesday to instead shrink the window to 45 days. This does not impact when a student-athlete can transfer, only when they can enter their name into the NCAA database to transfer without penalty."

Sounds fine. One addition needs to be there. IF it is not already part of the program.

If a Head Coach resigns/departs the athletes should have a set amount of time for transfers.

The myth of "the athlete signs for the School" is not right much of the time.

Look at Colorado. How many of those football players had the place on their radar before Neon Deion was announced as the new Coach?

If you coach leaves you should have a chance to do so as well.
