But its close and are you sure The Professor can't figure out a way, what if Messenbrink beats O'Toole?  Also now that you've used up Cornell, Mizzou & Iowa  is there another 3 team combo that can do it?

Regarding Shapiro and Mesenbrink.  Yes.  They just won worlds U20s.  Yes.  This bodes well for forecasting their NCAA success.  We should just temper expectations a bit though.  There are are some very good wrestlers still in their way.

I'm with you there, no need to go overboard.  That said, U20 champs are basically a guarantee to AA, and most win titles at some point in their careers.

Looking at the past 10 years of junior world champs in their first year of competition, we have:

2013
Snyder - 2nd place in first try in 2015 (no redshirt)

2015
Lee - 1st place in first try in 2018 (no redshirt)

2016
Lee - See above
Hall - 1st place in first try in 2017 (no redshirt)

2017
Hall - See above
Fix - 2nd place in first try in 2019
Steveson - 3rd place in first try in 2019 (no redshirt)

2018
Lewis - 1st place in first try in 2019

2019
Carr - 1st place in first try in 2021
Parris - 2nd place in first try (after world's) in 2021

2021
O'Toole - 1st place in first try (after World's) in 2022
Elam - 4th place in first try (after World's) in 2022
Amos - NQ in first try

2022
Volk - NQ in first try
Kueter - TBD

2023
Shapiro - TBD
Mesenbrink - TBD

Congrats to NHS for his make-believe coach of the year win on this make-believe topic.  And even more so for channeling his inner IlliniWrestlingBlog in the wit and wisdom of his post.

I think Cornell and Nebraska have the best chance at beating PSU. There are of course some toss ups that Penn State could win and could easily give them the dual. However, I don’t think there’s any two team combo that has a better chance

125 - Ungar dec. Howard 3-0

133 - Vito dec. Nagao 6-0

141 - Hardy dec. Bartlett 9-0

149 - Lovett Dec. Van Ness 12-0

157 - Robb Dec. Haines 15-0

165 - Ramirez Dec. Messenbrink 18-0

174 - Starocci Dec. Foca 18-3

184 - Truax Dec. Pinto 18-6

197 - Brooks Maj. Allred 18-10

285 - Kerkvliet maj. Fernandes 18-14

One thing this thread taught me is Cornell seems like the clear #2.  They’ve got a good shot at taking 4 matches and a slim shot at 5.

Give me Shapiro over Mauller, and maybe Ungar over Surtin, and yes I know he got pinned last year. And I don’t even like Cornell

Everyone seems to have this Messenbrink kid losing, I here tell he looks pretty good.

To be fair, it’s pretty much the only way to have a hypothetical PSU loss. You need to find six weights PSU could lose… it’s not 174, 197, or 285. One of them almost has to be 165. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him beat Ramirez, but it was the most logical way to have Cornell/Nebraska win the dual.

And maybe they just can't do it.  I think you need 3 teams.

141: Mendez dec Bartlett 10-0

149: Meyer Shapiro dec Shayne Van Ness 13-0

157: Sammy Sasso dec Levi Haines 16-0

184: Bernie Truax dec Jon Loew 16-9

197: Aaron Brooks dec Jacob Cardenas 16-12

285: Nick Feldman dec Greg Kerkvliet 19-12

This could happen, but I kinda doubt Sasso wrestles this season

You may not be able to do it with 77 teams lol. But Cornell and Nebraska would at least have an outside shot.

3 teams or a bit of luck with an upset or two

I think Carl should schedule at least two teams for every dual meet this year otherwise what's the point?

Certainly could reconfigure the tri-dual format this year.

If Penn State were to have Lock Haven and Lehigh competing against them in a tri-dual.  May as well have Lehigh vs Lock Haven go first.  And then whoever won each match advances to face Penn State on behalf of both other teams for the second dual.
