I glanced at something on here suggesting the courts might nix 5-in-5. But if it's a go, we need to rename the years.

You could keep "freshmen" for the first years and "seniors" for the final. I guess that "sophomore" has something to do with the second stage of the trivium; so, I guess it could stay second. Moving "junior" away from "senior" kinda kills the only justification for the label. If you want to keep the current four, we need a name for the third year.

But if we could escape the burden of tradition and coin a new set of labels, what would you suggest?

We could modify the tradesman hierarchy. Or, The clergy's. Or get conceptual, eg Aristotle's causes, Heidegger's modes of Being, Frye's anatomy of mythoi, etc.

... Apologies if I missed a memo that explained what we're doing. .. or if -- to my shame -- I have completely misunderstood 5-in-5.

They still will most likely graduate in 4 years and have a grad year to either stay or transfer to start a grad program.... do did anything really change?

... but what if they aren't but instead simply take a slow walk thru a four year program ... hence Five.

MAYBE the NCAA will come up with another term but I bet they use a term that already exists.

Freshman

Sophomore

Junior

Senior

Super/5th year senior

So you're a wrestler.  If your'e not the top ten in you're weight class, would you have redshirted or even want to stay in college 5 years to wrestle?  If your'e not on an NIL?

No way I'd stay 5.  Now if getting $1M each of 4 years and offered $2M for year 5 I'd think about it.  🤔

Probably depends on whether your future is with a Wall Street investment firm or as a high school coach.

Not sure why there has to be a naming conviction assigned to it…I’ve seen numerical categories on some of the rosters and it looks fine. Also makes perfect sense. (e.g. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th)
